Maura Cheeks Presents a Week of Chic Ensembles | Cup of Jo

Have you ever fantasized about opening your own bookstore someday? For novelist Maura Cheeks, that moment arrived on June 23rd with the inauguration of Liz’s Book Bar in Carroll Gardens. (It’s also a café and wine bar!) In this conversation, she shares insights about her work ensembles, cherished novels, and a $60 wedding band…

Shirt: Liz’s Book Bar. Shorts: Everlane, comparable. Hoops: comparable.

“Since my bookstore is named Liz’s Book Bar, many think I’m Liz, but she was actually my grandmother on my mother’s side. During my childhood in Philadelphia, we visited bookstores together, and she’d give me these hefty books that I might not have been ready for. She instilled in me the belief that writing was within my reach. Naming the shop in her honor seemed like the perfect tribute.”

Jumpsuit: Everlane, found on resale platforms. Tote: Liz’s Book Bar. Shoes: “Senderos clogs from DNA footwear,” comparable. Hoops: comparable.

“I often spend my time in the basement or behind the bar, so comfort is my main focus. I typically wear loose-fitting pants and closed-toe shoes. But when I’m pressed for time, I throw on this jumpsuit, which I find myself wearing at least once a week.”

Pants: Paloma Wool, available on resale sites, also comparable. Shirt: comparable. Shoes: “Senderos clogs from DNA footwear,” comparable.

“For trousers, I adore the bolder prints from Paloma Wool, such as these check patterns. They also offer the best sweaters — I’m always in one throughout the winter.”

“When we tied the knot, my husband and I desired simple rings. We discovered these black bands on Etsy. My husband is willing to cover a shift when we’re short-handed, which I truly value.”

Jumpsuit: “street festival in Philadelphia,” comparable. Hoops: comparable.

“New Yorkers tend to wear a lot of black, so when I opt for brighter pieces, our patrons often notice: ‘Oh, you’re in a good mood today!’ I genuinely enjoy working the bar shift at Liz’s. We’ve already established a roster of regulars, which is heartwarming, and our staff’s choices have been well-received. It’s a wonderful community.”

Shirt: Rag & Bone. Pants: 33 Field Trip. Shoes: “Senderos clogs from DNA footwear,” comparable. Hoops: comparable.

“In 2019, I penned an article about the racial wealth divide in the U.S. After wrapping it up, I still had several questions I yearned to explore. So, I turned to fiction. Acts of Forgiveness delves into the aftermath of a reparations act, examining its implications for one family and the broader societal landscape.”

“Operating a bookstore is more taxing and tiring than I ever envisioned, as is often the case. There are countless minor details, leading to daily on-the-spot decisions. But it is rewarding. There aren’t many Black-owned businesses in this area, and numerous Black women have approached me, expressing pride in what I’m accomplishing. I’ve finally stopped getting emotional when they say that.”

Thank you for inviting us into your bookstore and your life, Maura!

**Maura Cheeks Shares a Week of Stylish Outfits | Cup of Jo**

In the realm of fashion, personal style serves as a mirror of our identity, and for Maura Cheeks, her wardrobe selections are an ideal mix of comfort, elegance, and functionality. Recently featured on the popular lifestyle blog *Cup of Jo*, Maura Cheeks shared a week’s worth of chic outfits, providing readers a snapshot of her meticulously arranged looks that harmonize work, family responsibilities, and a passion for fashion.

Maura, a writer and editor residing in New York City, is well-regarded for her insightful commentary on race, identity, and culture. Yet, her fashion choices are equally fascinating as her written expressions. In this feature, Maura guides readers through seven days of outfits, each carefully chosen to reflect her hectic life as a working mother, while highlighting her affinity for timeless garments, vibrant colors, and chic yet functional accessories.

### Day 1: Easygoing Monday – Comfort at Its Best
Maura begins the week with a casual yet sophisticated ensemble. She combines a classic white button-down shirt with high-waisted, wide-leg jeans. The crisp shirt provides structure, while the loose-fitting jeans guarantee comfort for a day of working from home. To enhance the outfit, Maura includes a pair of striking earrings and a sleek leather belt. Her footwear choice? White sneakers that are both fashionable and practical for running errands or taking a walk in the park with her daughter.

**Style Tip:** A white button-down is a basic piece that can be dressed up or down. Pair it with jeans for a relaxed look or tuck it into a skirt for a more formal setting.

### Day 2: Tuesday Work Attire – Empowering Style with a Twist
For a day filled with meetings and deadlines, Maura selects a tailored blazer over a silk blouse, matched with cropped trousers. The blazer, in a vibrant shade of emerald green, injects a burst of color into the otherwise muted outfit. She concludes the look with pointed-toe flats, which provide both flair and comfort for navigating the urban environment. The structured blazer instills a sense of confidence, while the silk blouse adds a hint of femininity.

**Style Tip:** Embrace bold hues in your professional wardrobe. A brightly colored blazer or accessory can instantly transform a standard look.

### Day 3: Midweek Minimalist – The Allure of Monochrome
On Wednesday, Maura opts for the elegance of a monochrome ensemble. She sports a black turtleneck tucked into a pair of black wide-leg trousers, crafting a sleek and streamlined appearance. To break the solid black look, she layers on a camel-hued trench coat and dons a pair of gold hoop earrings. The outcome is an understated yet stylish appearance ideal for a day of writing and creative endeavors.

**Style Tip:** Monochrome ensembles provide an effortless chic vibe. Experiment with varying textures and accessories to add interest to the outfit.

### Day 4: Thursday Evening Out – Vibrant and Playful
For a well-deserved evening with friends, Maura amps up the style with a lively printed dress. The midi-length garment showcases a playful floral design in shades of red and pink, with its flowing silhouette making it fitting for both dinner and dancing. She complements the dress with strappy heels and a leather jacket for an additional edge. The fusion of delicate florals and tough leather results in a balanced, attention-grabbing appearance.

**Style Tip:** Don’t hesitate to blend contrasting elements like florals and leather. It’s a fantastic way to infuse character and complexity into your ensemble.

### Day 5: Casual Friday – Chic Athleisure
As the week draws to a close, Maura embraces a more laid-back look that remains polished. She combines a cozy oversized sweater with black leggings and slip-on sneakers. The athleisure-inspired outfit is ideal for a casual Friday spent working at a coffee shop or taking her daughter to the park. To keep it fashionable, she adds a crossbody bag and oversized sunglasses.

**Style Tip:** Athleisure can maintain style without sacrificing comfort. Choose high-quality fabrics and well-tailored items to enhance your look.

### Day 6: Weekend Brunch – Feminine and Fun
For Saturday brunch with family, Maura opts for a flowing midi skirt paired with a tucked-in graphic tee. The skirt, in gentle pastel tones, brings a feminine touch, while the graphic tee keeps the outfit casual and playful. She finishes the look with ankle boots and a denim jacket, achieving a perfect balance between dressy and relaxed. This ensemble is tailored for a leisurely weekend outing, blending both comfort and flair.

**Style Tip:** Mixing casual and dressy elements, like a graphic tee with a skirt, creates a versatile and distinctive outfit.
