Supporting independent shops is incredibly important, especially when it comes to small businesses in the UK. Their success benefits us all immensely.
I’ve been contemplating the significance of shopping at independent shops. What drives us to spend our hard-earned cash at an independently owned, UK store instead of a large corporation?
I have a deep appreciation for shopping at independent retailers, and countless others feel the same way.
There are numerous reasons for this; I’ve gathered 10 of the most essential ones here.
Selfishly, I’m presenting this from the perspective of a shopper; after all, that’s why I created Love Our Shops UK—I wanted to discover more independent retailers and struggled to do so. I could spot them on my local high street, but I also wanted to shop from small businesses online. However, my Google searches typically led me to larger corporations, while I prefer to support the smaller players.
I truly enjoy visiting independent shops and immersing myself in their world and community. This naturally leads to my first point:
Community
Independent shops foster community, contribute significantly to their surroundings, and play a vital role in enriching our lives with a sense of connection.
They add immense value beyond just being retail spaces; they are unique worlds in themselves, and as a customer, I relish the feeling of participating in their lives and communities when I purchase from them, engage with them online, or visit their locations.
The finest retailers (both online and offline) prioritize community-building.
- Choice
From a personal standpoint, I want independent shops to succeed because I value variety. Independent owners actively source products that appeal to us, their customers, curating selections aligned with our preferences.
In contrast, corporate entities often dictate what they aim to sell to us, focusing solely on their profitability. Their marketing materials and website designs often push us toward their product choices, which don’t always align with our best interests.
As we discuss choice, let’s move on to my next point—
Curation
Have you ever noticed how independent stores offer unique ranges and collections? Their products are typically well-chosen, high-quality, and deeply influenced by the owner’s passion and expertise.
While they take input from their customers, they do so in their distinct style.
For example, consider a fabric shop; there are many delightful options, and I often explore them. I’ve come to know which store provides what types of products, whose inventory aligns with my tastes, and what I can expect to find there. I even recognize the owners (even in an online setting), leading me to my next point—
Shop Keepers
Independent shops are operated by true shopkeepers. They may be solely run by the owner or a combination of the owner and a small team. These shops are managed by real individuals whom you can connect with, and vice versa.
Interacting with genuine people is a refreshing experience, unlike dealing with corporate chain stores or online marketplaces.
You can listen to some interviews with shopkeepers on my podcast, The Shop Independent Show.
Passion and Knowledge
Ever tried reaching out to a large online retailer for assistance? Neither have I. Or perhaps you’ve attempted their online chat support? I have—and none have proven particularly helpful.
On the other hand, I frequently contact a small online business for advice. Recently, I’ve asked about dog food, grass seeds, wiper blades, car batteries, and fabric choices for trousers (you’re now familiar with my life 😊).
Why this vast difference? Because shopkeepers possess a genuine enthusiasm for their products and have the expertise to help.
Their passion and knowledge are unparalleled. They always strive to share this with us and genuinely enjoy doing so.
Going the Extra Mile
Independent shops tend to go above and beyond in many aspects. They incorporate special touches, communicate in a friendly and engaging manner, share their insights, make you feel valued, ensure parcels are meticulously wrapped (often including a personal note), engage in conversation, and make a concerted effort to meet your needs…need I say more?
Customer Service
We all desire human interaction, personable service, and quality experiences that meet (or exceed) our expectations. When we need support, we want to speak to someone capable of assisting and who will go the extra mile to resolve issues amicably.
Independent shops deliver all of that, unequivocally.
Environmental Responsibility and Sustainability
Small businesses are genuinely concerned about their operations, including their footprint and environmental impact. They strive to source sustainable products, minimize packaging, utilize eco-friendly materials, and alter business practices to reduce environmental effects. The list continues.
Shopkeepers’ innate personalities tend to be caring, leading us to my next point—
Personality
Corporations have brands. Small businesses possess brands—along with their unique personalities. This personality infuses everything they undertake.
It permeates the aesthetics of their stores (online or brick-and-mortar), the selection of products they provide, their community interactions, service delivery, marketing efforts, and more. This distinctiveness is what makes them extraordinary, and I truly admire them for it.
Economic Contributions
Lastly, let’s address the financial aspect. If you spend ten pounds at an independent UK shop (online, on the high street, or at a market), where does that money go? It contributes to UK taxes, enriches the lives of the owners (local individuals), supports employees (again local), and helps fund purchases from other small businesses…you see the trend.
Your purchases from small businesses generally bolster the UK economy.
On the other hand, with a corporate entity, it’s uncertain how much of that money remains in the UK economy.
What are your thoughts? Am I justified in advocating for independent shopping, supporting small businesses whenever possible, and helping you discover these wonderful shops online?
I value these diligent shopkeepers and appreciate their presence in my life. I hope to see every one of them flourish, witness new shops arise, and contribute positively to our shared future.
Do you concur with my views? Are there additional reasons to ensure small businesses thrive in our lives? I would love to hear your insights. You can find my contact information here.
Thank you for taking the time to read, and please prioritize shopping independent as much as you can; it’s the most rewarding way to shop.
Happy shopping!
Barbara
