"Exploring the Most Popular Romantic Reads of the Season"

Regarding my reading preferences, I generally lean towards a vibrant mix of thrillers, somber epics, quirky little novels, and brief narratives. However, I prefer to alternate between intense and lighter fare, so after an exhausting tale, I craved something breezy and playful. A friend pointed me toward a well-loved romance series, and I eagerly jumped in.

I began with the wildly popular A Court of Thorns and Roses — known colloquially as the sultry fairy tale series. It kept me captivated for 200 pages, eagerly anticipating the significant interspecies romance that awaited, yet I was ready to wrap things up once it concluded. But then a friend insisted I MUST CONTINUE, and so I did, discovering that the sequel was an astounding 500 percent more steamy. I was immersed in it while lounging on the beach last summer when I spotted a woman bobbing in an inner tube, engrossed in the same vibrant teal book, her children bickering in the sand nearby. She appeared oblivious.

After indulging in a few innocent novels and The Shining for Halloween (absolutely), I added in another romance, then another. A well-crafted romance novel can evoke youthful butterflies, an infatuated crush, an attraction to the concept of a motorcycle, and the dreamy initial months of falling in love — even if it exists solely in your imagination.

I thoroughly enjoyed Emily Henry’s brilliantly crafted Funny Story, set in a Michigan lakeside town reminiscent of the one in which I was reading, Traverse City. I eagerly devoured Rochelle Billow’s literary gem, Ruby Spencer’s Whisky Year. I was charmed by Casey McQuiston’s Red, White & Royal Blue, which whisked me away to a realm of wealth akin to Crazy Rich Asians — and it had humor to boot. My book club tackled the time-bending The Seven-Year Slip, a charming weekend affair with a gentle homage to Auntie Mame.

I couldn’t help but reflect on a few things. Am I indulging in these books to fulfill some unfulfilled aspect of my life? Or does reading romance merely nurture the extended journey that is female desire? Many of us require buildup. We crave imagination. I was grateful these books sparked such contemplation. On Reddit’s r/RomanceBooks, I noticed a reader inquiring whether the book under discussion was “HEA” (“happily ever after”). She sought reassurance that she would enjoy herself without complications.

In my book club, I posed the question, “What is the most romantic book you’ve ever encountered?” I refer to a love story that stays with you for decades after reading it. For me, it was Waiting by Ha Jin, tied with Annie Proulx’s Brokeback Mountain. Not exactly HEA, but I gained deeper insights into love’s nature, feeling more profound heartaches from those novels than any others. Why not explore them all?
