I’ll confess. I was uninformed about Berlin, Germany. I suppose I just envisioned the Cold War and assumed it wouldn’t be a destination I’d appreciate. How wrong I was! So incorrect, in fact, that I wish we could have lingered longer there.
I adore visiting places that are not only stunning but also impart a history lesson I didn’t know I required. Our stay was merely for a day, and it was flawless. The weather was perfect, allowing us to roam around the city and uncover all its offerings.
There were countless “wow!” moments for both my husband and me. We embarked on a tour to witness the stark contrast between West and East Berlin–even now, many years later.
The ghost line of the Berlin wall cuts through the entire city. We were mesmerized as we strolled freely from one side to the other, reflecting on how many lives had been lost for the chance to do the same years ago.
We also visited the site of the book burning at Bebelplatz. The memorial features an underground library at the location. It was truly fascinating to witness this.
The bear has become a representation of Berlin, and we relished spotting various renditions of him throughout the city.
This Holocaust Memorial was among the most poignant I have experienced. Once again, we meandered on our own, simply absorbing it all.
I had a geek-out moment when we discovered that the Ante Nationalgalerie was showcasing an Impressionist art exhibit. It’s my favorite genre of art, and I couldn’t believe it was being displayed while we were there!
