Participating in the World of Coffee Event in Dubai 2025

With Martin Wolf and Cypher Roastery staff

Events in Dubai continuously elevate in scale and quality, and the World of Coffee 2025 Edition was no exception. I managed to attend only one out of the three days but still missed out on exploring all the halls, perhaps because I indulged in too much coffee and lost track after my tenth cup – the emoji of distress 😫 springs to mind. In short, WOC Dubai is undeniably evolving into a global coffee phenomenon and seems poised to remain prominent, showcasing all conceivable coffee equipment, suppliers, and coffee cultivators alongside world champions who prepared coffee right before you. Here’s a brief recap of my experiences;

Encountering Martin Wolf

Martin Wolf in action

Recently honored as the World Brewers Champion, Martin once made coffee for me at my favorite café in Vienna, Austria—Balthasar. Therefore, I was not only pleasantly surprised that he’d be attending but also thrilled to run into him (social media pic with him featured at the top of my post) and that he brewed coffee for me once again. What did I gather? He’s an advocate of using the WDT method for brewing filter coffee (check out my Instagram for more details).

Hacienda La Esmeralda

The first occasion I savored coffee from this renowned coffee estate in Panama, which claimed the title of the most expensive coffee in 2011, was at my café in Cape Town. The memory of that distinctive brew is still fresh in my mind – jasmine, earl grey, and blue flowers – sounds odd, but it left quite an impression. Hence, I was delighted to see the farmers brewing at the Espresso Lab stand and I managed to sample not just one but 3 cups, exploring both natural and washed varieties… YUM!

Bluewater

While wandering near the competition stage, I encountered Alexander from the company, based in Dubai and present at Roast Trip in Al Quoz. Essentially, as over 90% of coffee consists of water, achieving the right water quality is crucial. I was pleased to converse and learn about their revolutionary technology that purifies water, infusing Swedish minerals, enabling you to adjust TDS among other factors when brewing your coffee. For instance, you can tweak the minerals based on whether you’re making espresso or filter coffee. As you know, since more water is utilized for filter coffee, water quality plays an essential role. They also present their device for home use (tempting for me once I earn a higher paycheck). By the way, they won the best new product of the year award.

Ligre Espresso Machine

The owner, Lina Gronbach, reached out to me before WOC inviting me to check out their unique Ligre Youn espresso machine. She presented their sleek design, crafted from satin-finished anodized aluminum, which might easily be mistaken for an automatic machine, although the elegant wooden handle portafilter gives it away. Brewing is simplified with just a few lever buttons at the top, offering options for manual or automatic brewing along with an “uber” style milk technology that produces perfectly frothy microfoam. This aesthetically pleasing espresso machine is priced just under EUR 5,000, equipped with patented technology and a complementary grinder. Lina demonstrated its operation and prepared an authentic Italian espresso. Gaining traction in Germany among discerning coffee aficionados, it has already clinched gold at the German Design Award and the iF Design Award – no wonder there.

The Coffee Abundance

I was excited to meet Khaled the Siphonist, whom I follow on Instagram, and who was there to brew coffee using… you guessed it, a siphon.

I also dropped by one of my preferred coffee roasteries, Cypher, where I enjoyed their Palestina Coffee as my first milk-based drink.

I invited a friend considering launching a coffee business to soak in the ambiance, which he certainly did.

We strolled through numerous stalls, including Kiss the Hippo, Grandmother, Subko, and many others.

By far, the most extensive stand belonged to the coffee brand from Saudi Arabia, The Black Knight, where I met the CEO, who generously gifted me not one, but 4 bags of coffee to take home. Truly customer-focused.

And there you have it—my summary of WOC2025, and I am already eagerly anticipating the 2026 edition, where I hope to attend more than one day, insha’allah.
