Before my brief trip to London last week, my daughter expressed her desire to take me to a new coffee shop she believed I would enjoy. Thus, after dragging myself out of bed on a Sunday morning, the final day of our four-day trip after a whirlwind few days, I met her at Waterloo at Calico Coffee, located at 101 Lower Marsh Street, just a short five-minute stroll from Waterloo Railway Station.
As you step inside, you are welcomed by a fairly spacious area that allows you to peruse their coffee menu and pastry selections displayed in a glass case (very Nordic aesthetic). The brew bar directly in front features a La Marzocco Strada, and on the right side, they have coffee beans available for purchase, which you can also have ground on-site.
Walking along the left side, you’ll spot wooden shelves showcasing various magazines.
The ambiance struck me as distinctly Japanese, with minimalist design elements reminiscent of contemporary Japanese eateries, complete with high stool seating in the back next to the counter where filter coffees are made. At the rear, there’s a visually appealing one-group espresso machine labeled Maxim, and when I inquired, they informed me it was a Chinese-manufactured espresso machine (with a French name).
<pAs I walked back, I noticed that one of the baristas must have won this…
Yes, third place in the UK Brewers Championship in 2023.
After examining the coffee menu and discussing their milk-based coffee blends and the size of their flat white with the barista (a typical trait of mine, apologies), I chose their house blend upon hearing “Kenya.” My daughter opted for the americano.
A delightful cup with fruity notes of berries (a common Kenyan profile) lingering on the palate.
So, who or what exactly is Calico?
In summary, it is the first venture owned by two Chinese entrepreneurs, and from my observations, they seem dedicated to demonstrating to London that Chinese-inspired (or possibly Japanese) décor, coupled with an extensive brew bar, ample staff, pastries, and a relaxed atmosphere, fills a necessary niche in the London specialty coffee landscape.
Will I return again ❓
Absolutely, as I also want to sample their filter brewing technique.
We met a friendly barista named Maria, of Portuguese descent, who shared insights about the café, which has been open for approximately three months.
Before departing, I wandered over to their coffee retail shelf and, after browsing numerous labels and being encouraged by Maria, selected an Ecuadorian Anaerobic coffee from a Parisian roaster, Tanat, which had vibrant orange packaging. I look forward to brewing this at home soon. ☺️
If you find yourself in London, especially near Waterloo, I highly recommend checking them out; I believe you’ll be pleasantly surprised, rather than disappointed.
You can find them at Unit C, 101 Lower Marsh, London SE1 7AB.
