Caitlin Wylde resides with her canine companion, Rocket, on a tree-lined street in Echo Park, Los Angeles. Despite having called California home for more than three decades, her New England heritage lingers in her abode through family heirlooms and sea-inspired touches. Here, Caitlin takes us on a tour, with photos captured by Leela Cyd…
On making a bold move: Before relocating here, I was in a partnership, and even if I realized we weren’t compatible, we began house hunting together. The relationship concluded, and a fortnight later, I noticed this house for sale on a notice board in a bakery. Upon entering, I knew, ‘Oh my god. This is my home.’ I chose to take the plunge. It turned out to be the greatest leap I ever took.
LIVING ROOM
Wall paint: Sydney Harbour Paint Co.
On being a New Englander: Raised by the ocean in Massachusetts — encapsulated by nature, exploring the woods — New England significantly shapes my preferences and my work as an artist. I once crafted a series of hand-stitched banners from old boat flags, which was absurd, because they are huge.
On art with endurance: The circles on the table are really an art piece by me. Kids seem to love them. They beeline for them and end up throwing them around. But I let them — they’re durable!
On groupings: I adore creating clusters of items around the home. It’s been a pastime since childhood — gathering objects from outside and arranging them together as if they converse with each other. I’m always trying to streamline and stow away, but I simply end up crafting another scene. I can’t resist.
KITCHEN
Wall paint: Benjamin Moore Simply White.
On a connection: I found this French poster at an auction house here in L.A. Being born in the Year of the Rooster, I was instantly attracted to it when I realized it featured a rooster. I decided, ‘Okay, if the bidding remains reasonable, I will take it.’ Naturally, I was the sole bidder.
On utilizing what’s available: The kitchen was in poor condition when I moved in, so I worked to enhance its practicality. Given its compact space, I liken it to a boat kitchen.
On a landline: We had a similar phone in the kitchen during my upbringing, so I cherish having one at home. It served as my actual landline for many years until I discontinued the service, as the only callers were my mom’s old friends from back east, and they’d invariably forget the time difference!
On calendars: Each year, I purchase these calendars from a Los Angeles store named Bunkado. They are designed by artist Hajime Okamoto, with a new cat theme annually — this last one was railway cats. The sketch of my dog, Rocket, was made by my friend’s daughter, Charlie, at age four (she’s now 14). I treasure it dearly.
GUEST ROOM

On a playful environment: My friends’ children often congregate in the guest room during visits. Hence, it’s where I store all the toys, stuffed animals, and enjoyable items.
On a perfectly fitting bed: This is funny — before relocating here, I came across this bed. It was owned by a cherished neighbor having an estate sale when his partner passed. I simply adored the bed — it was so charming. So, I acquired it, my relationship ended, and I ended up in this house. When I saw the nook, with the small triangle ceiling, I inherently knew that bed should be there. It fit excellently.
On the green floor: Upon moving in, these floorboards were plain pine with shellac, and it was just — ugh. My solution was to coat them with this dark green paint. I’m thrilled I did, as it lifts my spirits every time I gaze at it.
BATHROOM
Model ship: similar.
On an exclusive trait: All the wood in the bathroom is cedar. So, when you bathe or take a steamy shower, the room has an amazing aroma.
Cabinet paint: Fine Paints of Europe in Navy. “It’s Dutch door paint — it endures infinitely!” Cup: Falcon. Clam shell bowl: similar.
BEDROOM

On red and white: I have a profound fondness for red-and-white stripes. Growing up, my dad’s best companion was a classics professor who spent time in Greece. We were fortunate to visit, and I vividly recall being four years old, standing on a beach, and viewing all these red-and-white beach balls. I was awestruck.
On a vibrant collection: I’m enamored with enamel lamps from the 60s and 70s. I get so exhilarated by the basic shapes, stunning hues, and functional design.
ART STUDIO
On rituals: I am a morning person, and my routine involves starting the day by burning Japanese incense and playing ethereal music, like Brian Eno. Then I have a cup of tea. I like sitting in the studio before starting work.
On reflection: Currently, my old and new pieces are mingled together in the studio, alongside some of my parents’ artwork. It’s lovely to observe the evolution, seeing how everything interlinks.
