The Music and Drama Club is a Cleveland-based 501(c)(3) organization that fosters interest in and admiration for the artistic disciplines of music and drama, offering scholarships and support to local organizations and schools within the Cleveland area.
In 1904, three socialites contemplated the idea of establishing a “study club.” Within months, Mrs. Minette Stahl (a soprano) and Mrs. Margaret Taylor Spitz (a Reader, the term used for dramatists at that time) gathered with five like-minded acquaintances to form The Music and Drama Study Club. The initial seven members began meeting bi-weekly in their homes to present programs centered on the lives of early composers. By 1911, membership had
increased to 40, split evenly between active members, who were responsible for entertaining the Club, and associate members, who took on the role of hostesses during the formal afternoon teas that followed each show.
In 1917, following the United States’ declaration of war on Germany, Stahl and Spitz transformed the meetings into fundraising events for the Red Cross. During The Great Depression, Club President, Mrs. W.R. Jeavons, offered her home as a venue for meetings to keep the Club afloat. When the country entered WWII, Club President, Mrs. Dieter, redirected the Club’s efforts towards fundraising for the Red Cross.
While the Club had always engaged in charitable giving, the first official Music and Drama Scholarship was awarded in 1936. That original donation of $50 to The Cleveland Music School Settlement has since evolved into the current scholarship program. Beginning in 1941,
members accumulated the bulk of scholarship funds by collecting and redeeming Ohio Sales Tax Stamps. In 1960, the Club identified the need to establish a capital fund that would eventually yield sufficient interest income to sustain the scholarship program. The annual Holiday Scholarship luncheon has since become the highlight of each Music and Drama season and a major source of scholarship funding. In 2024, marking its 120th anniversary, the Club’s legacy of promoting artistic appreciation and nurturing young talent anticipates another 120 years of enriching the cultural landscape of Cleveland. In 2024, the Club was inducted into the 100 Year Club of the Western Reserve, honoring organizations that have been in continuous existence for a century or more.
Currently, its annual activities include teas, luncheons, and the Holiday Scholarship Luncheon. Scholarships are a crucial component of the Club’s mission. These events facilitate networking among members and performers, alongside professional performances.
