Hazel: An Advocate and Survivor for the LUNG FORCE Walk

In 2022, Hazel experienced a persistent cough that wouldn’t subside. Worried, she visited her doctor, who recommended a CT scan—just to ensure everything was okay. The results unveiled an unexpected truth: lung cancer.

Hazel shed tears. Then, she inhaled deeply and posed the question that would alter her path: “What should I do now?”

A non-smoker with no apparent risk factors, Hazel was taken aback. Yet, she didn’t linger in shock for long. She began to comprehend her diagnosis and delve into her treatment possibilities. Fortunately, the cancer was detected early—and it was manageable. Her subsequent move involved getting active. Hazel connected with the American Lung Association’s LUNG FORCE Walk, where she volunteered and uncovered something she hadn’t realized she was missing: a caring, supportive community of individuals who understood her journey.

“One woman shared a story that mirrored mine,” Hazel recounted. “She was also a non-smoker and underwent the same surgery. We had the opportunity to meet, and it was wonderful to relate and converse.” That connection intensified Hazel’s dedication. She teamed up with advocates in Washington, D.C. to present her story to lawmakers and advocate for increased funding, awareness, and access to early diagnosis. As she told her fellow advocates, “We got this.”

Why the LUNG FORCE Walk Is Important

Lung cancer continues to be the primary cause of cancer fatalities in the United States—yet it often goes unnoticed. The American Lung Association’s LUNG FORCE Walk aims to change this. It’s about taking action, fostering community, and generating awareness and funds for research, early detection, and support for those affected by lung illnesses. This is not merely a walk—it’s a movement. And Hazel’s narrative is just one of many that emphasize the significance of participating.

An Accessible, Family-Friendly Gathering for All

This year’s LUNG FORCE Walk, sponsored by Cleveland Clinic, is scheduled for Sunday, September 28, 2025, at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. It’s free to participate and includes complimentary admission to the zoo for the entire day—making it a fantastic

event for individuals, families, teams, and workplaces to enjoy together. Whether you’re walking in tribute to someone, as a survivor yourself, or simply to support the cause, this is an inclusive, community-wide event where everyone is welcome.

Join Us in the Walk

Hazel’s story began with a symptom she didn’t overlook—and while her cough ultimately proved unrelated to her cancer, it may have preserved her life. Her journey is a compelling reminder that taking a single small step can lead to something significantly greater. Now, we’re posing the question to you: What will you do next?
