In 2025, I’ve encountered numerous coffee experiences, both familiar and fresh, and I sometimes find myself hoping, even praying, for one of my favorite spots to establish itself in my city. My prayers were fulfilled when I came across an article in Coffee News revealing that Watchhouse, a leading specialty coffee chain in London, was coming to Dubai. The most exciting part? It wasn’t some announcement set for two years down the line; it was happening in just weeks, with a grand opening in November 2025. How exciting!
Situated in a popular pop-up area named Marsa Boulevard, which operates from 4pm-12am, adjacent to Dubai Festival City Mall, Watchhouse is surrounded by a mix of local coffee and dessert brands and a handful of international ones.
I’m pleased to share that I visited twice within four days.
During my initial visit, I wasn’t shocked to see a lengthy line, as many Emiratis waiting were likely already acquainted with this brand from central London.
I patiently stood in line with my daughter, and since it was evening, I ordered a batch brew. The place was quite packed, leaving little room to sit, but we managed to snag two spots in front of their brew bar, peppered with numerous V60 brewers.
Later, a barista informed me that they pre-dose and pack their filter coffees, store them in a freezer, and simply brew them upon receiving an order. While we were seated, waiting for my coffee, I spotted an AeroPress champion trophy and inquired, “Who won this?” having just judged the UAE AeroPress championship two days prior, leading me to meet the third-place winner.
He generously offered us any coffee we desired on the house; my daughter opted for matcha … (I was contemplating coffee… but you know how trends roll with GenZ… sigh). Nonetheless, I decided on a flat white to sample their milk-based beverages.
I can’t quite pinpoint what they included in that flat white, but it turned out to be one of my all-time favorites this year… why? I asked the manager, who explained about the milk they use, which I believed made the difference, as their espresso blend, 1829 Espresso, is identical to what they serve in London.
The batch brew was enjoyable too, with notes of dark fruit, but I later noticed I received the Ethiopian instead of the El Salvador (I think) that I had ordered.
A few days later, I met a friend for lunch at the same mall, and upon finishing, I realized it was 3:30 pm…. only 30 minutes until Watchhouse opened. So, I took a leisurely stroll and arrived right at 4 pm…. I was the first customer. I wandered around, snapping a few photos. The temptation to indulge in a slice of cake was strong… who could resist?
However, one of the staff suggested that a chocolate tart (last pic) would pair perfectly with my flat white, and I gave in. My flat white was exquisitely poured by one of their main baristas from Cameroon. (oops, I forgot his name).
I met the head barista from Zimbabwe, who enlightened me about their philosophy, and I shared my long-standing familiarity with the brand as my go-to in London.
Another delectable experience.
