Discovering Three Cafés During a Layover in London

Discovering Three Cafés During a Layover in London

Constantly seeking fresh coffee adventures during my visits to London, I stumbled upon two new spots and I’m excited to share one of my favorites.

2 Love Coffeehouse, 89 St John’s Rd, London SW11 1QY

Situated at the crossroads of St Johns Road and Battersea Rise, about a 5-6 minute stroll from the bustling Clapham Junction railway station, is 2 Love Tea and Coffee – although their coffee selections take center stage on the menu. I’ve actually frequented this establishment a few times; if I can sneak out of the house before the day’s agenda is set, I can treat myself to a delicious flat white. Upon entering, an assortment of delectable cakes greets you on the left, an invitation hard to resist for anyone besides cake haters. I must admit, I have passed on them a few times but have given in to the temptation of their red velvet and carrot cake on other occasions.

I typically stop here for a great flat white and often grab coffee to bring back to Dubai as well.

The Coffee Guild, 106 Walton Street, Oxford OX2 6AJ

During our son’s master’s graduation, after a long day without specialty coffee, I was delighted to spot this coffee shop as we made our way to the celebratory dinner across the street. While everyone headed to the restaurant, I had to pause to grab something after noticing the La Marzocco Linea espresso machine – I must sound like a junkie… Nevertheless, it was worthwhile, a double espresso to keep me going for the rest of the day.

After dinner, my brother indulged in a latte and I picked up a bag of their espresso blend.

Two aspects truly impressed me at this coffee establishment.

First, when was the last time you found a coffee shop in England that is open after 6pm? The only one I can recall is Watch House in Bloomsbury, London. Curious, I asked the owner and was informed they remain open until 11pm… indeed, you read that correctly. I’m fairly certain no other coffee shop in England operates this late.

Secondly, the owner and staff members were so welcoming that I almost felt compelled to award them the title of “the happiest coffee shop in England.” Their enthusiasm in serving coffee and sharing that they are open until 11pm was simply wonderful.

Highly recommend.

Treelogy Coffee, 50 Eastbourne Terrace, Paddington, London W2 6LG

I must confess, when a London friend proposed we meet here for coffee and a catch-up, I felt a bit doubtful – likely due to the name. I was on the verge of suggesting a different place, but knowing our time was limited, I decided to check them out instead.

Indeed, I spotted images of latte art, but I sought more information. So, I arrived a bit earlier than my meeting to scope the location. Unlike most London coffee shops, except for the stylish and refined Watch House, many resemble a more neighborhood feel, but this one appeared quite corporate as it was positioned at the base of a relatively new office building adjacent to the recently renovated Paddington railway station. After observing the barista and inspecting their coffee selections, I opted for a cortado.

It was delightful, and perhaps I shouldn’t judge a coffee shop based on its flooring…. Ha!.
