This weekend, I picked up a classic cold-and-cough blend from my children. While recuperating, I munched on French lozenges and switched on a film…
Have you watched Oh, Hi? Featuring Molly Gordon and Logan Lerman, the film follows new couple Iris and Gordon during a romantic countryside weekend. After a creek swim and preparing scallops for dinner, they discover handcuffs in their Airbnb and opt to handcuff Gordon to the bed. Exciting! Seductive! But after they become intimate, Molly realizes Gordon doesn’t truly believe they’re exclusive. In a downward spiral, she opts to keep him chained to convince him he’s truly in love with her, albeit unknowingly.
The plot seems crazy, I admit, and maybe it was my Robitussin-driven daze, but I chuckled repeatedly. The first part features all the typical rom-com elements: singing along in the car, stopping to purchase strawberries, dancing under trees adorned with fairy lights; while the latter part evolves into a madcap black comedy thriller (imagine: SNL meets Misery), with Molly’s two friends arriving to help her decide on the next steps. Even though the story was nonsensical, the friends’ dynamics and dialogues felt SO authentic to me.
Even this image cracks me up.
How about you? Which films do you consider underrated? Also on my radar: the cult classic So I Married an Axe Murderer.
P.S. An eight-minute short that will bring tears, and what are your top three films of all time?
