Trip to Calico Coffee in London

Trip to Calico Coffee in London

Before my brief trip to London last week, my daughter revealed that she wished to take me to a new coffee spot she believed I’d enjoy. So, after managing to get out of bed on a Sunday morning, the last day of our 4-day journey and following a busy few days, I met her at Waterloo at Calico Coffee, located at 101 Lower Marsh Street, around a 5-minute walk from Waterloo Railway Station.

As you step inside, you encounter an adequately open area, allowing you to view their coffee menu and pastry selection behind a glass counter (very Nordic). Their brew bar directly in front features a La Marzocco Strada, and on the right side, they offer coffee beans for takeaway or can grind them for you as well.

Strolling along the left side, you’ll spot wooden shelves filled with magazines.

The atmosphere reminded me strongly of Japan, characterized by its minimalist design and décor that resembled contemporary Japanese eateries, complete with high stool seating at the back next to the counter, where they prepare filter coffees. At the rear, there was an appealing single-group espresso machine labeled Maxim, and when I asked, they informed me it was a Chinese made espresso machine (with a French name).

As I moved back, I observed that one of the baristas must have received this accolade…

Indeed, third place in the UK Brewers championship in 2023.

After scanning the coffee menu and asking the barista about their milk-based coffee blends and the cup size for their flat white (a typical tendency of mine, I apologize), I opted for their house blend when I heard “Kenya.” My daughter chose the americano.

A delightful cup with hints of berries (a typical Kenyan profile) around the edge of the palate.

So, who or what exactly is Calico?

In essence, it’s the first establishment owned by two Chinese entrepreneurs, and from what I observed, they appear determined to demonstrate to London that a Chinese-inspired (or was it Japanese?) décor, complete with a vast brew bar, plenty of staff, pastries, and a relaxed atmosphere, is a niche they are eager to occupy within the London specialty coffee landscape.

Will I return ❓

Absolutely, because I also want to explore their filter brewing capabilities.

We met a friendly barista named Maria, originally from Portugal, who shared insights about the shop, which just opened around 3 months ago.

Before departing, I checked out their coffee retail shelf, and after examining various labels and encouraged by Maria, I chose an Ecuadorian Anaerobic coffee from a Paris-based coffee roaster, Tanat, with its striking orange packaging. I eagerly anticipate brewing this at home soon. ☺️

If you’re in London and near Waterloo, make sure to stop by, and I believe you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

You can find them at Unit C, 101 Lower Marsh, London SE1 7AB.
