“Would you contemplate doing a Monday update?” a reader named Molly remarked some time ago. “It could be a great addition to the ‘Have a Great Weekend’ posts. I’m always intrigued by how the party went, the dress choice, the movie experience, etc.” I’ve created several weekend summaries afterward, and here’s another — and please do share your own experiences in the comments…
Long-time followers may be as astonished as I am that Toby is LEARNING TO DRIVE. Where does the time go! We’ve been taking our old VW to deserted parking lots so he can practice accelerating, braking, navigating turns, parking, and occasionally giving me a mini heart attack.
Additionally, on a stroll through Manhattan, I discovered an all-cat bookstore in the East Village. I snapped a picture for my cat-loving niece, along with a vow to bring her there during her next visit.
This past Saturday, we attended the bar mitzvah of a dearly-loved family friend, which was pure joy from beginning to end. He did an impressive job standing in front of a temple full of preteens (quite the discerning audience) and presenting his interpretation of the Torah.
Laughter, dancing, pizza, and arcade games filled our time afterward…
…although the preteens were most likely captivated by the self-cleaning toilet across the street. It was, as they say, seriously cool.
This congratulatory note from the boy’s uncles also touched me deeply. Such a wise and lovely sentiment to hear at the age of 13.
Plus, over the recent week, I photographed folks in Brooklyn for a street-style edition of Big Salad (free for all)…
…so it was amusing to bump into a stranger this weekend only to realize we were wearing exactly the same outfit.
Finally, the boys and I are marking Mother’s Day tonight (as they were with their father yesterday) and might watch the movie The Sheep Detectives — we keep hearing fantastic things. “In the 1980s and ’90s, movie studios regularly released family-friendly, PG-rated films that lived up to that rating: They were designed for the entire family to enjoy, with parental guidance,” wrote Alissa Wilkinson in The New York Times. “Mature themes — death, divorce, other of life’s darker elements — might blend into lighter comedy. They weren’t merely children’s films that adults could sit through, but intended for viewers of all ages.” Have you seen it?
So! What did your weekend look like? Walks? Books? Ice cream? I’d love to hear about the highs, the lows, anything you wish to share. xoxoxo
P.S. Loads of fun things, and do you have religious beliefs?
