From London to Dubai.
We’ve encountered a few places like this in Dubai, whether it’s a posh restaurant, a bakery, or a boutique BUT when it comes to specialty coffee, such finds are quite rare. In fact, one of my favorite specialty coffee spots from London is set to open in Dubai this week or next – stay tuned for more details upon my visit, God willing.
So, let’s talk about Half Cup, Dubai.
I wasn’t familiar with this café prior, but when our daughter suggested it as a spot to celebrate my wife’s birthday with brunch, I looked it up, checked their coffee offerings, and we were on our way.
It’s located in a new residential complex in Business Bay, surrounded by stylish apartment buildings called Peninsula 1, 2, 3, etc., so as you drive up, you could be anywhere globally, with the canal view in close proximity. Half Cup is ultra-modern, resembling a glass box filled with sunlight and having some outdoor seating for when the temperature cools down – which it does in Dubai, from early November to about late March.
While there aren’t many seats inside, we managed to grab one as we walked in. We were served by what I can only describe as my waiter of the year, Chris, who was incredibly attentive and helpful. I believe our first mistake was not heeding his advice on the portion sizes. Whoa!
I’m unsure if you can appreciate the size of our Turkish Eggs order with beef brisket, but the BBQ Beef Brisket Brioche sandwich alone was enough for three.
Whoa!!!!
If you happen to go there and order the eggs royale, do be warned that it’s also a serving for two, as I noticed at the table next to us who had ordered it.
Now, how’s the coffee?
Perched atop an eye-catching steel brewing bar was their two-group La Marzocco Linea espresso machine paired with two Victoria Arduino grinders. They offer a variety of coffees for both filter and espresso, roasted locally by one of my favorite Dubai roasteries, so I was confident in their selection. I chose a flat white made with Brazilian beans.
Delicious with notes of nuts and milk chocolate. Thankfully, I ordered this prior to my meal, as I often do when I have eggs prepared in tomato sauce, i.e., the Turkish eggs. Otherwise, finishing my coffee could have been a challenge.
I highly recommend it, and did I mention they also have a dinner menu?
I’m already anticipating my next visit because when I discover exceptional food and coffee, you can bet I’ll be planning to return soon.
