Last month, I received an invitation to participate in a China Arab Expo in Yinchuan, a city located approximately two hours west of Beijing by flight. Although I didn’t come across any coffee shops there, I satisfied my coffee cravings with my Aeropress, knowing that Beijing would present greater options. Before my journey, I utilized Google to find the finest specialty coffee spots in Beijing, and to my delight, Voyage Coffee was among the top results.
So, on the second day of my time in Beijing, I prioritized my exploration of the city—specifically in search of quality coffee—by heading to the artistic district of 798 751 Park, the location of Voyage Coffee. Initially, I felt a bit uneasy as I had vastly underestimated the scale of this establishment and, without WIFI, I began to feel anxious. However, as I entered through the main pedestrian entrance, a sign directing me to Voyage Coffee appeared on my right… what luck!
I discovered that the main entrance was situated in a cul-de-sac, resulting in a little adventure for me.
Upon entering, I was welcomed with a cheerful Nihao (hello in Chinese) and greeted by a Scandinavian-inspired interior featuring light brown wood and concrete – a perfect representation of urban Nordic chic, in my opinion.
They boast a La Marzocco Strada accompanied by Mazzer grinders, and the menu displays Chinese on one side and English on the other. The cafe bustled with locals and expatriates, some engrossed in their laptops while enjoying their coffee.
I observed their Probat 12kg coffee roaster elegantly encased in glass for all to admire. A barista informed me that they roast coffee every Tuesday. I chose a flat white made with their Black Forest blend, even though it was late in the day, as I had been without espresso-based drinks for days, along with a New York-style cheesecake.
Delicious. I tasted hints of chocolate and dried fruit on my palate, and the cheesecake was surely one my wife would have approved of.
Before I could finish my coffee, Cody, the top barista, approached me to offer a Kenyan cold brew coffee.
I think she realized that I seemed more serious than other patrons when I asked questions about the coffee earlier, plus her command of English was superior, while others appeared confused when I inquired about flavor profiles.
I enjoyed it so much that I wanted to purchase a bag of beans, and Cody was thrilled, rushing to the back to fetch one, BUT unfortunately, they had run out. I opted for her alternative suggestion, an Ethiopian Mansa, since it was naturally processed.
I recorded some videos for my Instagram reels and then departed.
Highly recommended when in Beijing.
I meandered through the art district, as someone suggested checking out another coffee shop, which I failed to locate, but I tried Manner coffee, which was passable, and I spotted %arabica, which had striking décor, but I found their beans too darkly roasted for my taste, so I opted not to stop.
You can find them in China, Beijing, Chaoyang, 酒仙桥路4号北京798艺术区内 邮政编码: 100102
