In 2025, I encountered a variety of coffee experiences, both familiar and fresh, and frequently I ponder and maybe even wish that one of my favorites would launch in my city. My hopes came true when I discovered through Coffee News that Watchhouse, London’s leading specialty coffee establishment, was making its debut in Dubai. The best part? It wasn’t one of those announcements with a two-year wait but rather a matter of weeks, culminating in November 2025. Hooray!
Situated in an upgraded pop-up area known as Marsa Boulevard, which opens from 4pm to midnight and is adjacent to Dubai Festival City Mall, Watchhouse sits alongside numerous local coffee and cake shops as well as a handful of international brands.
You’ll be pleased to hear that I visited twice within four days.
During my first visit, I wasn’t taken aback by the long line, as I knew many Emiratis queuing were likely well-acquainted with this brand from central London.
I waited patiently with my daughter and, since it was evening, I ordered a batch brew. Seating was limited due to the crowd, but we managed to find two spots in front of their brew bar, which was dotted with many V60 brewers.
Later, I discovered from one of the baristas that they pre-dose and package their filter coffees, storing them in a freezer and simply taking them out to brew upon receiving an order. While we waited for my coffee, I spotted an AeroPress champion trophy and inquired, “who was the winner?” since I had served as a judge at the UAE AeroPress championship two days prior and was introduced to the individual who came in third.
He generously offered us any coffee we desired on the house, and my daughter opted for matcha… (I was thinking, coffee… but you know how trends are with GenZ… sigh). Nevertheless, I decided on a flat white, wanting to try their milk-based drinks.
I have no idea what they added, but it was easily one of my top flat whites of the year… why? Well, I asked the manager, who informed me about the milk they used, and I realized that was the factor, since their espresso blend, 1829 Espresso, is identical to what they serve in London.
The batch brew was enjoyable as well, with touches of dark fruit, though I later noticed that I was served the Ethiopian instead of the El Salvador (I think) I had requested.
A few days later, I met a friend for lunch at the same mall and with our meal completed, I realized it was 3:30pm… half an hour until Watchhouse opens. I strolled around and arrived right at 4pm… I was their first customer. I checked out the place and took a few photos. I was tempted to splurge on a slice of cake… who wouldn’t?
However, one of the staff recommended a chocolate tart (last pic) as the perfect accompaniment to my flat white, so I gave in. My flat white was expertly poured by one of their lead baristi from Cameroon. (oops forgot this name).
I met the head barista from Zimbabwe, who educated me about their philosophy, and I mentioned my long-standing familiarity with the brand as my go-to in London.
Another delightful experience.
