How’s your summer progressing thus far? Currently, Anton’s on a trip with his father, and I miss him dearly! It’s a challenging part of being divorced, but I’m attempting to handle it like strengthening a muscle and focus on other activities. So! Last weekend, Toby, Freddie and I took a drive upstate to see friends. When Freddie came to collect us, he amused us with this sign.
Check out the view from their front porch! It’s amazing to have a pool right in the front yard.
Our friend Jimmy cooked linguine with clam sauce (NYTimes gift link) for dinner — “But I used freshly shucked clams, not canned,” he mentioned, “They provide a superior taste and texture.” — paired with Alison Roman’s spicy breadcrumbs, or “savory sprinkles” as his children labeled them. Soooo delightful and lemony.
Later, we played Ono 99 (a highly enjoyable, lively game that’s easy to grasp) and I adored these expressions when they realized defeat was imminent.
Recall Sharon?
We also visited a nearby cheese store with the most amusing little signs. This one made me chuckle: “Excellent gouda of unknown origin and undetermined age. Acquired from our Belgian cheese guy, who supplied no documentation and isn’t answering his emails. Probably Dutch, maybe Belgian.”
Finally, my dear friend recently underwent surgery and requested quick amusing podcasts while recovering. I remembered this old round-up — what would you add to the list?
Hope your summer is progressing nicely, but of course it doesn’t have to be! As Zora Neale Hurston penned, “There are years that probe questions and years that provide answers.” What have you been up to? Here for it all, and sending love, as always. xoxo
P.S. A few more pick-me-ups:
* entertaining break-up advice from Gemma
* delectable boxed brownies and trendy $40 sandals suitable for hiking
* inviting long-time friends to hang out (gave me a laugh)
* sneaking potato chips into recipes and greeting the neighbors
* distinguishing between hotels and Airbnbs, hahaha
**Five Ways to Boost Your Mood**
In today’s rapid-paced world, it’s common to feel inundated and stressed, which can adversely affect your mood. However, there are simple and effective techniques to elevate your spirits and enhance your overall wellness. Here are five strategies to uplift your mood:
1. **Exercise Consistently:**
Physical activity is one of the most powerful ways to boost your mood. Exercise triggers the release of endorphins, which are chemicals in the brain that function as natural pain relievers and mood enhancers. Whether it’s a brisk walk, a yoga session, or a high-intensity workout, incorporating regular exercise into your routine can significantly enhance your mental health. Strive for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week to experience the mood-boosting effects.
2. **Practice Mindfulness and Meditation:**
Mindfulness and meditation are effective tools for alleviating stress and boosting mood. By concentrating on the present moment and recognizing your thoughts and feelings without judgment, you can nurture a sense of calm and clarity. Regular meditation practice has been shown to alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression. Start with just a few minutes daily, gradually extending the duration as you become more comfortable with the practice.
3. **Connect with Others:**
Social interactions are crucial for emotional wellness. Spending time with friends and family, engaging in meaningful dialogues, and partaking in social activities can help counteract feelings of loneliness and isolation. Make an effort to reach out to loved ones, join clubs or groups with shared interests, or volunteer in your community. Building and nurturing strong relationships can provide support and notably elevate your mood.
4. **Ensure Adequate Sleep:**
Sleep is vital in regulating mood and emotional health. Lack of sleep can result in irritability, stress, and concentration difficulties. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to allow your body and mind to rejuvenate. Establish a regular sleep schedule, create a relaxing bedtime ritual, and ensure your sleep environment is conducive to rest. Prioritizing sleep can lead to an improved mood and increased resilience to stress.
5. **Engage in Enjoyable Activities:**
Allocating time to participate in hobbies and activities that bring you happiness can have a substantial impact on your mood. Whether it’s painting, gardening, reading, or playing an instrument, doing what you love can provide a sense of achievement and satisfaction. Regularly make time for these activities and don’t hesitate to explore new interests that might add more happiness to your life.
Incorporating these strategies into your routine can help elevate your mood and improve your overall quality of life. Remember that it’s crucial to find what suits you best and to be patient with yourself as you implement these positive modifications.
