The Music and Drama Club is a Cleveland area 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to fostering interest in and appreciation for the arts of music and drama, while also providing scholarships and support to local organizations and educational institutions.
In 1904, a trio of ladies who met for lunch pondered the notion of founding a “study club.” A few months later, Mrs. Minette Stahl (a soprano) and Mrs. Margaret Taylor Spitz (referred to as a Reader in the era of early dramatists) convened with five friends to establish The Music and Drama Study Club. The original seven members began gathering in the homes of members every two weeks to present programs that highlighted the lives of early composers. By 1911, the membership had
expanded to 40, balanced evenly between active members, who were responsible for entertaining the club, and associate members, who acted as hostesses for the formal afternoon teas that followed every performance.
In 1917, when the United States announced war on Germany, Stahl and Spitz restructured the meetings to serve as fundraisers for the Red Cross. During The Great Depression, Club President Mrs. W.R. Jeavons offered her home for meetings to keep the Club operational. When the United States entered WWII, Club President Mrs. Dieter redirected the Club’s efforts towards fundraising for the Red Cross.
Though the Club had traditionally engaged in charitable endeavors, the first official Music and Drama Scholarship was not presented until 1936. The initial $50 contribution to The Cleveland Music School Settlement developed into the current scholarship program. Starting in 1941,
members gathered the bulk of scholarship funds by collecting and redeeming Ohio Sales Tax Stamps. In 1960, the Club recognized the necessity of creating a capital fund that would later yield sufficient interest income to sustain the scholarship program. The annual Holiday Scholarship luncheon has now become the highlight of each Music and Drama season and one of the principal sources of scholarship funding. As the Club commemorates its 120th anniversary in 2024, its legacy of promoting artistic appreciation and nurturing young talent is poised for the next 120 years of enhancing Cleveland’s cultural landscape. In 2024, the Club gained membership into the 100 Year Club of the Western Reserve, a recognition of organizations continuously operating for at least a century.
Currently, its annual events comprise teas, luncheons, and the Holiday Scholarship Luncheon. Scholarships remain a fundamental aspect of the Club’s mission, and these events facilitate networking among members, performers, and professional presentations.
