Crucial Activities for a Laid-Back Summer

What’s on your list for the summer? Here are 10 laid-back activities I’m considering (and I’d love to know yours)…

1. Embrace drinks o’clock. When we visit relatives in England, we always meet for ‘drinks o’clock’ at 6 p.m. with friends, neighbors, and anyone passing by. Back in Brooklyn, my kids and I frequently sit on our stoop at that hour, marking the shift from work to a relaxing summer evening. Lately, we’ve been enjoying Sprite and lingonberry, but sparkling water works just as well.

2. Relax on the couch and peruse magazines with the fan blowing. Especially short stories from The New Yorker, which are amusing, poignant, and spooky.

3. Play cards outdoors. Our favorite CoJ contributor Alex Ronan has engaged in countless rounds of the card game Spite & Malice with her girlfriend, she shared. “I can’t even count how many games we’ve played while traveling, at bars, or on Sunday mornings with coffee, but it never gets old. Each game has its unique flow. It’s the ideal game for two players.” Tonight, Freddie and I are actually meeting Alex and Grace to learn the game — we’ll keep you updated!

4. Capture photos of your friends and their children. Above is my friend Claire with her daughter at Toby’s baseball game. Moms in the pictures, always and forever 🙂

5. Watch a movie from the ’90s. We enjoy viewing ’90s films while traveling. They’re entertaining and familiar, allowing for casual conversation and snack munching while watching. A few to kick off your list: The Talented Mr. Ripley, Clueless, Fargo, Boyz n the Hood, The Firm, The Fugitive, and Goodfellas.

6. Snack on potato chips from a mug. This brilliant idea belongs to my brother, preventing those nearby from pilfering your chips. Otherwise, sneaky hands will be coming in from all sides.

7. Create an acrostic poem for someone you care about. This might sound quirky, but give it a chance, haha. My friend Liz once crafted acrostics for us during a dinner visit, and I’ve always remembered how lovely it was. Such a straightforward yet meaningful gesture. I made one this year for Freddie’s birthday, and it was fun to weave in insider jokes and nicknames. They don’t need to be flawless, just sincere 🙂

8. Experience art in person, if the mood strikes, like Amy Sherald at the Whitney (coming to D.C. in September!) or the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. The colors match nicely.

9. Indulge in soft serve, like a vanilla-chocolate swirl.

10. Stay indoors and don’t feel guilty about it. As someone who often struggles to quiet her mind, this is my favorite. My friend Sharon refers to these as “catch-up days,” where every family member takes a break, staying inside and doing nothing at all. Maybe enjoy a bowl of cereal? Take a cold shower and see how long you can withstand it? Just avoid being productive because that’s against the rules.

What’s on your summer agenda? I’d love to hear. And here’s the best piece of parenting advice I’ve ever received.

P.S. Easygoing summer checklists from 2019, 2022, and 2023. They remain relevant!

**Vital Activities for a Laid-Back Summer**

As the days lengthen and the temperatures climb, the call of summer encourages us to slow down and enjoy the season. However, achieving a genuinely relaxed summer takes a bit of forethought and organization. Here are some vital activities to ensure you maximize this delightful time of year.

**1. Clear Out and Organize:**
Before diving into summer enjoyment, take some time to clear out your living space. Get rid of things you no longer use, organize your home, and create a peaceful atmosphere. A neat environment can significantly lessen stress and enhance relaxation.

**2. Arrange a Vacation or Staycation:**
Whether you’re heading to a distant place or enjoying home comforts, setting up a vacation or staycation can be a highlight of your summer. Explore potential destinations, reserve accommodations, and formulate an itinerary that balances adventure with relaxation.

**3. Compile a Summer Reading List:**
Summer is an excellent season for catching up on reading. Assemble a list of books you’ve been wanting to tackle, and dedicate time each day to delve into a great story. Whether fiction, non-fiction, or a blend of both, reading can provide a delightful escape.

**4. Draft a Summer Bucket List:**
Enumerate activities and experiences you wish to partake in this summer. From hiking trails and beach outings to experimenting with new recipes or acquiring a new skill, a bucket list can help ensure you enjoy the season to the fullest.

**5. Emphasize Self-Care:**
Summer is perfect for prioritizing self-care. Establish a routine incorporating regular exercise, wholesome eating, and mindfulness practices. Whether it’s yoga, meditation, or simply taking time for yourself, self-care is vital for relaxation.

**6. Get Your Outdoor Area Ready:**
Enhance your outdoor living space to transform it into a welcoming retreat. Clean and arrange patio furniture, plant flowers or herbs, and add evening lighting for enjoyment. A comfy outdoor area can serve as an ideal spot for relaxation and socializing.

**7. Organize Summer Gatherings:**
Coordinate events with family and friends. Whether it’s a barbecue, picnic, or pool gathering, planning occasions can create cherished memories. Send out invites, organize menus, and ensure you have all the supplies needed for a successful event.

**8. Stay Hydrated and Sun-Safe:**
During the summer heat, it’s crucial to keep hydrated and shield yourself from the sun. Have water bottles available, apply sunscreen regularly, and wear hats and sunglasses outdoors.

**9. Discover Local Attractions:**
Take advantage of local landmarks and events. Visit parks, museums, or farmers’ markets, and get involved in community happenings. Exploring your local area can provide both relaxation and enrichment.

**10. Unplug and Disconnect:**
Lastly, consider stepping back from digital devices. Set parameters for screen time and focus on being present in the moment. Disconnecting can help alleviate stress and enable you to fully embrace the summer experience.

By addressing these essential tasks, you can establish a foundation for a relaxed and enjoyable summer. Welcome the season wholeheartedly, and make the most of the warm, sunny days ahead.
