I’ll be honest. I was not well-informed about Berlin, Germany. I suppose I only envisioned the Cold War, thinking it wouldn’t be a place I’d enjoy. How wrong I was! So mistaken, in fact, that I wish we could have stayed longer.
It’s delightful when I travel to a place that is not only stunning but also imparts a history lesson I didn’t know I needed. We only spent one day there, and it was incredible. The weather was perfect, allowing us to roam the city and uncover all its offerings.
My husband and I experienced countless “wow!” moments. We took a tour to see the stark contrast between West and East Berlin—even after all these years.
The invisible line of the Berlin Wall extends across the entire city. We were amazed as we walked freely from one side to the other, reflecting on how many lives were lost for the ability to do just that in the past.
We also visited the location of the book burning at Bebelplatz. The memorial features an underground library at the site, which was incredibly cool to see.
The bear has become a representation of Berlin, and we enjoyed spotting the various depictions of him around the city.
This Holocaust Memorial was one of the most impactful I have experienced. Once again, we wandered at our own pace, soaking it all in.
I had a total geek-out moment when I discovered that the Alte Nationalgalerie was featuring an Impressionist art exhibition. It’s my favorite style of art, and I was ecstatic it coincided with our visit!
For instance? Here I am geeking out. It was breathtaking to see their brushwork! Their signatures! Ugh. Love you, Claude.
There is SO MUCH more I could share regarding Berlin, but I want you to know that I initially wasn’t particularly excited about visiting…and then I was completely proven WRONG. It was both beautiful AND historic. I wholeheartedly recommend it!
