Effortless and Laid-Back Autumn To-Do List | Cup of Jo

Effortless and Laid-Back Autumn To-Do List | Cup of Jo

What’s on your checklist for fall? The air is getting brisker, we’ve filled our fridge with apples, and I’m eager to queue up my favorite comfort film. Here are eight more relaxed activities I’m looking forward to…

1. Shop in a physical store. This past weekend, I visited Sézane in Manhattan to explore their fall collection, and it was such a delight. The boutique is stunning with velvet curtains in the dressing rooms and welcoming sales staff. I tried on several everyday items, such as a patent leather bag (available in four shades), a roomy trench coat (with an adorable lining!), and leopard-print shoes (which would pair nicely with jeans). Afterward, I enjoyed a coffee and strolled home under the sunshine — the entire morning was a blast.

2. Go apple picking. My friend Alison recently took her kids to Fishkill Farms and raved about it. “We do this every year,” she shared. “The farm has everything you want: apples, pears, flowers, and a tractor ride around the farm. By the day’s end, the kids were covered in dirt and so happy.” Plus: the next morning, you can whip up some apple pancakes.

3. Discover the ultimate egg sandwich/banana bread/croissant/cookie/whatever you fancy. Just last week, I was texting with a friend who’s had a tough time. We brainstormed enjoyable activities to lift her spirits and decided to hunt for the best chocolate chip cookies in Brooklyn. Do you have any go-to places? (So far, L’Appartement 4F is in the lead.)

4. Binge-watch Bad Sisters season two. The Irish black comedy returns on November 13th. I loved all the characters in this fantastic series and can’t wait to see what my imaginary best friend Sharon Horgan has in store for the next season.

5. Organize a craft night. I’m terribly uncrafty, but after making Valentine’s Day cards with friends last year, I realized I enjoy crafting, even if the outcome isn’t great. As the days become shorter and we spend more time indoors, I’m searching for easy projects to tackle with friends or the boys. How wonderful would these grape garlands be as a dinner table centerpiece?

6. Take a stroll while listening to a hilarious podcast. There’s a unique satisfaction in autumn walks — inhaling the fresh air and crunching leaves beneath your feet. If you feel chatty, have a brief phone call with a friend. Or, if you’re in the mood to chuckle, tune into the Celebrity Book Club episode featuring French chef Jacques Pépin — it’s fantastic.

7. Relax on the sofa with a captivating book. What are you reading? Two of my favorite authors — Elizabeth Strout and Sally Rooney — are releasing novels this fall. In Strout’s latest, Tell Me Everything (out today!), her two cherished protagonists, Lucy Barton and Olive Kitteridge, join forces in a murder mystery. Rooney’s Intermezzo follows two brothers grieving their father’s death while dealing with their chaotic (naturally) romantic lives. Plus, Rumaan Alam’s upcoming book, Entitlement, which is said to have Succession vibes, releases next week — did you ever read his chilling 2020 novel Leave the World Behind? I get shivers just thinking about it.

What’s on your laid-back fall checklist this year? I’m eager to hear.

P.S. A fall indulgence along with our favorite bunny rabbit shows.

**Simple and Relaxed Fall Checklist | Cup of Jo**

As the air becomes crisp and the leaves transform, fall encourages us to slow down, relish the present, and enjoy the cozy comforts of the season. Whether you’re someone who adores pumpkin spiced everything or simply appreciates the beauty of nature’s metamorphosis, fall is the ideal moment to pause, take a breath, and relish life’s simple joys. To assist you in making the most of this enchanting season, we’ve prepared a straightforward and leisurely fall checklist inspired by the cozy, relaxed essence of *Cup of Jo*.

### 1. **Relish a Warm Drink**
There’s something undeniably soothing about cradling a warm mug as temperatures dip. Whether you prefer a classic pumpkin spice latte, a creamy chai tea, or a classic cup of hot chocolate, take a moment to unwind and enjoy your favored fall drink. For an extra cozy experience, consider making your beverage at home and experiment with homemade syrups or spices like cinnamon and nutmeg.

**Pro Tip:** Try crafting a batch of homemade apple cider. Let apples, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and a hint of brown sugar simmer for a wonderfully aromatic treat.

### 2. **Enjoy a Nature Walk**
Fall is one of the most picturesque seasons to step outside and relish nature. The vibrant hues of red, orange, and yellow leaves create a stunning canvas for a leisurely walk. Whether it’s a stroll through your neighborhood, a hike in the woods, or a visit to a nearby park, take some time to breathe in the fresh, crisp air and admire the beauty that surrounds you.

**Pro Tip:** Bring a camera or your phone to capture the sights of the season. You might even want to gather a few colorful leaves to press and keep as a memento.

### 3. **Bake Something Cozy**
Nothing captures the essence of fall quite like the aroma of something delectable wafting from the oven. Whether it’s a traditional apple pie, a batch of pumpkin muffins, or a loaf of cinnamon-swirled bread, baking is a fantastic way to introduce warmth and comfort into your home. Plus, it provides a perfect reason to invite friends or family over for a cozy afternoon.

**Pro Tip:** If you’re pressed for time, try an easy recipe like baked apples. Core a few apples, fill them with oats, brown sugar, and cinnamon, and bake until soft. Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a simple yet indulgent dessert.

### 4. **Layer Up in Comfy Attire**
One of the highlights of fall is the chance to don your coziest sweaters, scarves, and boots. Embrace layering by mixing textures like wool, cashmere, and flannel. Whether you’re relaxing at home or heading out for a casual weekend jaunt, fall fashion is all about being comfortable and warm.

**Pro Tip:** Invest in a versatile, oversized cardigan or a soft blanket scarf. These pieces are perfect for layering and transition easily from indoors to outdoors.

### 5. **Ignite a Fall-Scented Candle**
The soft glow of a candle can instantly make a space feel warm and welcoming. Select a fall-scented candle with hints of cinnamon, clove, vanilla, or wood smoke to establish a cozy atmosphere in your home. Lighting a candle in the evening offers a simple yet effective way to decompress and unwind after a hectic day.

**Pro Tip:** If you prefer something more natural, opt for a beeswax candle or a soy-based candle infused with essential oils. These tend to burn cleaner and have a longer lifespan than standard paraffin candles.

### 6. **Enjoy a Cozy Movie or TV Show**
As the days shorten and temperatures drop, it’s the perfect excuse to snuggle up on the couch with a warm blanket and watch a feel-good movie or TV show. Whether it’s a nostalgic classic like *You’ve Got Mail* or a seasonal favorite like *Hocus Pocus*, fall is the ideal time to indulge in some screen time.

**Pro Tip:** Create a cozy movie-watching environment with ample blankets, pillows, and snacks. Popcorn drizzled with cinnamon or caramel makes for a delightful fall-inspired treat.

### 7. **Plan a Casual Gathering**
Fall is a beautiful time to reconnect with loved ones, but you don’t need to organize an elaborate event. A simple, low-key gathering with close friends or family can be just as special. Invite a few people over for a relaxed potluck, a game night, or a cozy evening of chatting by the fire.

**Pro Tip:** Keep things uncomplicated by serving a one-pot meal like chili or soup. Pair it with crusty bread and a seasonal salad for a straightforward, comforting feast that everyone will appreciate.

### 8. **Check Out a Local Farmers’ Market**
Fall is harvest season,
