“Last year, before my book tour for Housemates, I arranged a session with Dacy Gillespie, a stylist specialized in weight-inclusivity. From a young age, I had been conditioned to think of clothing in terms of ‘Does it flatter my figure?’ in the sense of minimizing. I had always believed I couldn’t wear turtlenecks because of my larger bust. Dacy simply asked, ‘Does this turtleneck appeal to you?’”

“As I’ve gained confidence in my body and felt more attractive, my attention to style has heightened. Seeing the joy my partner, Art, finds in fashion has been a huge motivator. They dedicate time and effort to finding the perfect piece and genuinely enjoy assembling outfits.”

“For my book tour, I set aside funds for several delightful, higher-priced pieces — I wanted to honor the effort and solitude that goes into writing a book — and this dress was among them. It’s incredibly comfortable, akin to wearing a caftan. This hat is one I’m knitting for a friend; I’m a huge fan of neon. I’ve been knitting since I was eight, taught by my mom.”

“There’s a belief that being plus-size means bright colors will attract unwanted attention. It’s true I receive comments about this dress, but that’s because it radiates happiness. I enjoy being part of that joy, even if it leads to a bit more attention on my outfit.”

“This December, my mom gifted me a tote from the Paris Review! I was initially puzzled until I realized the design is a piece by my grandfather, an artist. He passed away when I was eight, but my most vivid memory is visiting him in Key West. I can still picture him on his small boat, wearing a captain’s hat while sipping a very strong vodka martini.”

“I had a lot of experience with thrifting growing up, but as my body changed, I found I didn’t fit most vintage shops anymore; it was disappointing. I would shop with friends but would only look at accessories. In New Haven, I found Witch Bitch Thrift, which offers size inclusivity. Shopping there felt transformative — they invest considerable effort into measuring each item and translating that into modern sizes. My friend Emma Specter also pointed me towards Proud Mary in L.A.”
“There’s an expression that says, ‘No great literature is produced by someone in pajamas.’ Meanwhile, I’m crafting in a caftan and a super comfy robe. (I have a great passion for robes, and this one is especially amazing.) Nevertheless, when I have teaching days or events to attend, I make it a point to dress up.”
