When I initially separated, I would drop my kids off at their father’s apartment each Tuesday evening and wave cheerfully (“have fun!”) — but as soon as the door shut behind them, I’d feel my lip tremble. (I value my alone time now, but those early moments were difficult.)
My friends Mo and Nathan resided half a block away, so on those evenings, I would frequently head straight to their place. They’d be balancing dinner preparation and homework for their four children, yet they would always, without fail, welcome me with broad smiles and pull up an additional chair at their dining table. Their home was such a gentle landing spot, and my eyes still well up with tears when I recall that daily kindness.
Fast forward to this past December. My boys were with their dad, leaving me to spend Christmas Eve solo. I intended to enjoy a quiet evening at home (HBO and grilled cheese), but as the sun dipped below the horizon, those old shaky emotions surged back.
“Hey, could I possibly drop by?” I texted Mo, attempting to sound nonchalant. “Or are you having quiet family time? No problem either way!”
Without hesitation, Mo encouraged me to come over, so I made my way to their house, played with their kids, indulged in too many sugar cookies, watched some magic tricks, and captured a family portrait for them. Before returning home, feeling happy and rosy-cheeked, I expressed my gratitude to Mo and Nathan, to which he looked at me and responded, “Come anytime, come every time.”
