Explore Voyage Coffee in Beijing, China

Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in the China Arab Expo in Yinchuan, a city roughly a two-hour flight to the west of Beijing. Although I couldn’t locate any coffee shops there, I resorted to my aeropress for my coffee craving, and I had a hunch that Beijing would provide more options. Prior to my journey, I searched online for the best specialty coffee in Beijing and, surprise, Voyage Coffee was mentioned.

On my second day in Beijing, I ensured that my initial exploration of the city— or should I say my quest for quality coffee— would start at the art district, 798 751 Park, where Voyage Coffee is situated. At first, I felt a bit nervous as I underestimated the venue’s size and, without WIFI, I began to worry. However, upon entering through the main pedestrian entrance, I noticed a sign indicating Voyage Coffee to my right… and there it was!

I learned that the main entrance led to a sort of cul-de-sac, which added a little adventure to my quest.

Upon stepping inside, I was welcomed with a friendly Nihao (hello in Chinese) alongside a Scandinavian-inspired interior featuring light brown wood and concrete, which I affectionately label as urban Nordic chic.

They have a La Marzocco Strada paired with Mazzer grinders, and the menu showcases Chinese on one side and English on the reverse. The café was bustling with both locals and expats, many engrossed in their laptops while savoring their beverages.

I noticed their Probat 12kg coffee roaster displayed in a glass enclosure for all to admire. A barista informed me that they roast every Tuesday. I decided on a flat white with their Black Forest blend, even though it was late in the day, as I hadn’t enjoyed an espresso-based drink for days, along with a New York-style cheesecake.

Delicious. I could taste hints of chocolate and dried fruit on the edges of my palate, and the cheesecake was something my wife would have definitely enjoyed.

Before I finished my coffee, Cody, the leading barista, approached me with an offer for a Kenyan cold brew.

I think she noticed my serious inquiries about the coffee earlier compared to other customers, and she was the one with the best English among the staff, as the others looked a bit confused when I started asking about flavor profiles.

I was so impressed that I wanted to purchase a bag of beans, and Cody was thrilled to rush to the back for one, but unfortunately, they were out of stock. I went with her second suggestion, an Ethiopian Mansa, since it was a natural processed variety.

I recorded some videos for my Instagram reels and then took my leave.

Highly recommended if you’re in Beijing.

I strolled around the art district as someone suggested checking out another coffee shop, which I couldn’t find, but I tried Manner coffee, which was decent, and I spotted %arabica, known for its cool decor, though I found their beans a bit too darkly roasted for my taste, so I passed.
