From London to Dubai.
We’ve encountered various establishments like this one in Dubai, whether it be an upscale dining spot, a bakery, or a store, but when it comes to specialty coffee, this is quite uncommon. In fact, one of my favorite specialty coffee venues from London is set to open in Dubai this week or next – more details on that after my visit, God willing.
Now, let’s talk about Half Cup, Dubai.
I was unfamiliar with this café, but when our daughter recommended it for brunch to celebrate my wife’s birthday, I looked into it and their coffee, and off we went.
It’s located in a newly built residential complex in Business Bay, amidst stylish apartment buildings named Peninsula 1, 2, 3, etc., so as you approach, you could be anywhere in the world, with a canal view not too distant. Half Cup itself is extremely modern, resembling a glass box filled with sunlight, and has some outdoor seating for when the weather is cooler – yes, it does cool down in Dubai, from early November to late March.
Although seating is limited inside, we managed to snag a spot as we arrived. Our server, Chris, possibly my waiter of the year, was incredibly attentive and accommodating. I think our first mistake was not heeding his advice regarding the portion sizes. Whoa!
I can’t quite capture the size of our Turkish Eggs with beef brisket, but the BBQ Beef Brisket Brioche sandwich was sufficient for three.
Whoa!!!!
If you decide to visit and order the eggs royale, take caution; it’s ample for two, as I noticed at the table next to us.
So, what about the coffee?
Perched above a striking steel brewing bar was their two-group La Marzocco Linea espresso machine paired with two Victoria Arduino grinders. They offer a range of coffee selections for both filter and espresso, roasted locally by one of my favorite roasteries in Dubai, so I felt confident in their offerings. I opted for a flat white made with Brazilian beans.
Delicious, with notes of nuts and milk chocolate. Thankfully, I ordered this prior to my meal, as I often do when having eggs cooked in tomato sauce, like the Turkish eggs. Otherwise, finishing my coffee might have been a challenge.
I highly recommend it, and did I mention they also have a dinner menu?
I’m eagerly anticipating my next visit, as whenever I discover good food and coffee, you can bet I’ll be planning another trip there soon.
You can find them at Peninsula 5, Business Bay, Dubai.
