“I always look for solid wood furniture when checking Facebook Marketplace,” shares Jessica Manning-Brose, who was raised in Stockholm and Minneapolis, but now resides in Los Angeles with her spouse, Zach, and their child, Nina Mae. “They’re usually well-crafted and available at lower prices than they should be because they were owned by someone’s grandmother and don’t fit the current trend.” Here, Jessica offers us a glimpse inside…
DINING AREA

On growing up in Sweden: I was born in Stockholm and spent my early years there. I recall feeling very supported by our community. It’s a society deeply rooted in family and ensuring everyone has what they need, like playgrounds on every block. I also remember running through the woods with friends and berry picking. It’s such a charming and serene location.
On Swedish traditions: I have a sweet tooth and love Swedish desserts. My favorite is semla, a cardamom bun that’s split in half and filled with fresh whipped cream and almond paste. We also keep candles lit all year; they create a cozy atmosphere in the house.
LIVING AREA

On clever furniture: This room serves both our dining and living needs, so I aimed for two areas that flowed nicely. The daybed indicates that each section of the room has its purpose.
On rug shopping: I appreciate how a large rug can make a room feel warm and settled. I believe people often avoid buying large rugs due to their high prices, but Rugs USA partners with interior designers and offers stunning collections. If you’re shopping second-hand, aim for a 100% wool rug. This way, you can take it to a cleaner, and it will endure for years.
On learning to thrift: We had a constrained budget, so I grew up thrifting for clothes and furniture alongside my mom. Sometimes it felt a bit embarrassing. All my classmates wore Abercrombie & Fitch while I sported styles from Goodwill. But now, I take pride in having developed the ability to go into a store and find unsuspecting pieces that can fit our lives.
KITCHEN
On family rituals: Zach, Nina, and I treasure our morning strolls. When the heat hits in L.A., we’re out the door by 6 a.m. to enjoy the refreshing morning breeze. At that hour, the neighborhood is incredibly tranquil, and our daughter loves the stroller, so everyone enjoys looking at the gardens and waving at a few neighbors with dogs.
On a pantry staple: I enjoy baking with Trader Joe’s bourbon vanilla bean paste. It’s reasonably priced and contains little vanilla bean specks and rich flavor. It’s also delicious stirred into coffee.
FAMILY ROOM

On growing up in Minnesota: My American parents met while in Stockholm, but they always intended to return to the U.S. We ultimately settled in Minneapolis, close to my grandparents. Minneapolis is a fairly large city with abundant nature access. The lakes are enchanting, and children can simply enjoy being kids. The winters can be harsh (with those negative 40 wind chills!), but it’s a wonderful place to grow up.

On negotiating tips: If you wish to haggle with a Facebook Marketplace seller, inform them that you can pick up the item immediately. They are often willing to accept a lower offer once they realize they won’t have to negotiate with several people over a few days.
On a home sweet home: To me, thrifted items give a house a sense of home as you know they carry stories within them. They bring a feeling of warmth and security, which is particularly comforting since we reside in a rental and are unsure how long we’ll be here.
NURSERY

On a labor of love: My husband and I discovered our daughter’s dresser at a thrift shop. I dedicated my entire pregnancy to refinishing it — sanding, stripping, and staining. I nearly gave up several times since I hadn’t anticipated how significant an undertaking it would be! However, it was wonderful to prepare something special for her.

On pops of color: We aimed for her nursery to feel lively and playful, but not overly ‘baby.’ I painted the walls ‘Old White’ by Farrow & Ball, making it feel bright and lovely, then relied on Nina’s toys to provide color and fun.
PARENTS’ BEDROOM

On easy TV: Zach and I recently concluded that we needed something light for winding down at night. We are revisiting Schitt’s Creek, and I had forgotten how hilarious it is! My favorite character is Alexis; she’s iconic.
On motherhood surprises: Growing up, I worked as a nanny, so I thought I understood parenting. However, the realities of motherhood have been a revelation. It’s a completely different experience to go to someone’s house, care for their children, and then return home for a good night’s sleep. The sleep deprivation has been real! Conversely, being a mother has also been the most beautiful change — experiencing the world through fresh eyes has been magical.
