Do you own garments you’ve worn countless times? Mine include this top and these shoes. So comfortable and convenient. (Check out this budget-friendly version of the footwear.)
Last weekend, Freddie and I attended the Amy Sherald exhibition at The Whitney Museum. She creates portraits of Black Americans, showcasing them as they are and addressing the historical exclusion of Black individuals in traditional American portraiture. For instance, this man seated on a beam alludes to the iconic image “Lunch Atop a Skyscraper,” while the depiction of two men kissing (above) references a 1945 photo of a sailor kissing a woman in Times Square. They’re breathtaking to see in person, and I wholeheartedly recommend attending the exhibit if you can!
This week, I sent my friend Alison a bouquet, and the florist, aware that the intention was to provide comfort, included such lovely delicate, feathery flowers. I was moved by the concept of women supporting women to support women.
We discussed Guinness cake and its “moist darkness” this week, but what about mud cake? Jenny Rosenstrach added salted chocolate icing to her recipe, and she states, “I swear I nearly teared up when I sampled the outcome, I had forgotten how incredibly amazing it was, both rich and chocolatey while having a distinctly springy texture.”
Lastly, I’ve been perusing Keith McNally’s memoir, and I must say, it’s a hit. The New York restaurateur has strong opinions on everything from lengthy walks (“I’d prefer trekking in unremarkable countryside rather than in the Himalayas”) to his mother (“there was always someone she believed ‘snubbed’ her”) to common phrases (“I doubt I could love anyone who uses the phrase ‘reach out to’”). It’s entertaining to hear him enthusiastic and irate about eateries, family, and life. If you’re in the mood for memoirs, here’s a list of others we’ve thoroughly enjoyed too.
P.S. More enjoyable items, and four comedic scenes that brought me laughter.
**Five Powerful Mood Enhancers**
In the current fast-moving world, keeping a cheerful mood can be difficult. Nonetheless, there are numerous effective methods that can help elevate your spirits and enhance your overall wellness. Here are five mood enhancers that can make a substantial difference:
1. **Stay Active:**
Regular physical activity is among the most effective mood boosters. Exercise triggers the release of endorphins, which are brain chemicals that serve as natural pain relievers and mood lifters. Whether it’s a quick stroll, a run, or a yoga class, incorporating consistent exercise into your daily life can alleviate stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. Try to engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise on most days to reap these advantages.
2. **Embrace Mindfulness and Meditation:**
Mindfulness and meditation serve as potent techniques for enhancing mental well-being. These activities assist you in concentrating on the present, reducing stress, and fostering a sense of tranquility. Regular meditation can heighten self-awareness and emotional resilience, making it easier to cope with negative feelings. Begin with a few minutes daily and gradually extend the time as you grow more comfortable with the process.
3. **Build Connections:**
Social connections are crucial for emotional health. Spending quality time with family and friends or participating in social events can create a sense of belonging and nurture support. Positive social interactions release oxytocin, a hormone that fosters happiness and mitigates stress. Make it a point to connect with loved ones, partake in clubs or community events, or volunteer to form meaningful relationships.
4. **Prioritize Sleep:**
Adequate sleep is vital for maintaining mood balance and cognitive abilities. Insufficient sleep can result in irritability, stress, and concentration difficulties. Strive for 7-9 hours of restful sleep each night to guarantee that your mind and body are rejuvenated. Develop a consistent sleep routine, cultivate a calming bedtime ritual, and ensure your sleeping environment is comfortable to enhance sleep quality.
5. **Explore Creative Outlets:**
Engaging in creative endeavors like painting, writing, or playing an instrument can be exceptional avenues for self-expression and relieving stress. Involvement in creative tasks allows you to process your feelings and can result in a feeling of achievement and fulfillment. Even if you don’t regard yourself as an artist, experimenting with different creative activities can be an enjoyable and satisfying way to uplift your mood.
Integrating these mood enhancers into your everyday routine can lead to enhanced mental health and a more optimistic perspective. Remember to discover what resonates with you and to practice patience as you navigate various methods.
