Hazel: A Champion and Advocate for the LUNG FORCE Walk

In 2022, Hazel experienced a persistent cough that wouldn’t disappear. Worried, she consulted her physician, who scheduled a CT scan—just to be cautious. The results brought an unexpected revelation: lung cancer.

Hazel wept. Afterward, she took a deep breath and posed a question that would alter everything: “What should I do now?”

A non-smoker with no discernible risk factors, Hazel was taken aback. Nevertheless, she didn’t remain idle for long. She set out to comprehend her diagnosis and investigate her treatment choices. Fortunately, the cancer was detected early—and it was manageable. Her following step was to get involved. Hazel discovered the American Lung Association’s LUNG FORCE Walk, where she volunteered and uncovered something she hadn’t known was missing: a caring, supportive community of individuals who understood her experiences.

“One woman had a similar story to mine,” Hazel recounted. “She too was a non-smoker and underwent the same surgery. We had the opportunity to connect, and it was wonderful to relate and converse.” That bond deepened Hazel’s commitment even more. She joined a group of advocates in Washington, D.C. to relay her story to policymakers and advocate for increased funding, awareness, and access to early detection. As she conveyed to her fellow advocates, “We got this.”

Why the LUNG FORCE Walk is Important

Lung cancer is still the primary cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S.—yet it often goes unnoticed. The American Lung Association’s LUNG FORCE Walk aims to change that. It’s about taking action, fostering community, and raising funds and awareness for research, early detection, and support for individuals affected by lung ailments. This is not merely a walk—it’s a movement. And Hazel’s story is one of many that illustrates why participation matters.

A Free, Family-Friendly Event for All

This year’s LUNG FORCE Walk, sponsored by Cleveland Clinic, occurs on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. It’s complimentary to attend and offers free zoo admission for the day—making it an ideal
