It requires more energy to participate in those settings; it’s worthwhile, but it’s tough.”
“For years, I didn’t pull my hair back until I was 24 because I didn’t want others to see my hearing aids. Now it’s common for strangers to glance at my ears. It’s fine — perhaps they notice the small tube and wonder, Is that an earring? But that really troubled me when I was younger because I wanted to hide that aspect of myself. Growing up as a girl, a teenager, a young woman was already hard without feeling different. For a long while, I believed there was something wrong with me, instead of just accepting that this is who I am.”

“I function in a predominantly male environment, and initially, I struggled with confidence. I would wait for guidance from senior colleagues, even when I already had the answers. But then it hit me, I earned this position for a reason, I work hard, and I can believe in myself. I’ve encountered numerous toxic supervisors and incredibly strange situations, but I’ve ultimately built the confidence to discern when I’m correct and when to assert myself, as opposed to when to stay quiet. Surprisingly, recognizing when I don’t have all the answers also makes me effective in my job. I work alongside many subject matter experts, and I’m very at ease listening to others. You can’t possess every answer all the time; you have to depend on the team. Everyone brings something valuable.”
