Leila Kelleher’s Guide to Weekly Outfits

Leila Kelleher's Guide to Weekly Outfits

“Individuals who wear plus sizes often find it challenging to showcase their style due to limited choices,” states Leila Kelleher, a pattern creator and an assistant professor at Parsons School of Design. Fortunately, Leila picked up sewing in high school. Currently, she produces 75% of her wardrobe; for the remaining 25%, “I prefer to support brands that embrace my shape.” Here, Leila presents five outfits she sported over a week…

Top: Lobethal, “crafted by me using my pattern label Muna and Broad.” Skirt: Pyrmont, “crafted by me using my pattern label Muna and Broad.” Footwear: Hark Weber. Socks: Bombas. Eyewear: Platoy. Lip shade: Glossier lipstick in Zip.

“I was raised in Sydney and picked up sewing during high school. In class, we created fitted jackets, swimwear, formal attire for prom, you name it!”

“People always mentioned that making your own underwear was transformative. Even though I knew I could easily buy decent underwear, I thought, Alright, I’ll draft a pattern and stitch it up. I was utterly amazed. Now, 100% of my underwear is self-made.”

Denim ensemble: Street & Saddle shirt, trousers, and ribbon tie. Sneakers: SAS X Body of Work (no longer in stock). Belt: Etsy, or something similar. Sunglasses: “vintage seventies eyewear from Fabulous Fanny’s.” Lip shade: Merit Flush Balm in “Persimmon.”

“This outfit is courtesy of Street & Saddle, which exudes a slight equestrian, Western essence. They excel in terms of inclusivity. Everything is custom-made, so you just submit your measurements, and they’ll tailor any piece.”

“At Parsons, I enjoy observing my students’ outfits. Each day feels like a fashion showcase. And when a colleague remarks, ‘Oh my gosh, your outfit is fantastic,’ it’s rewarding because they understand.”

Outfit: Irregular Sleep Pattern dress. Necklace: Barrow PDX. Footwear: Torrid, something similar. Eyewear: Platoy.

“This dress is technically sleepwear, yet it’s suitable for outdoor wear. I adore vibrant, saturated hues.”

“My hairstyle varies frequently. Currently, I’ve got an Edna Mode vibe going on. For eyewear, I’m obsessed with Fabulous Fanny’s and Opticianado.”

Jacket: a Space, in between. Top: similar. Jeans: “Cooper jeans from my pattern label Muna and Broad.” Sneakers: SAS X Body of Work (no longer available). Necklaces: Hesta.

“I earned my Ph.D. in biomechanics, which entails studying how the human body functions and moves. Observing bodies in this context helped me escape the ‘good’/‘bad’ body dichotomy that fashion heavily emphasizes. I began contemplating how to design patterns for various shapes. Nothing compares to garments that fit wonderfully.”

“Driven by inspiration, I co-founded a plus-size sewing pattern label, Muna and Broad, alongside a plus-size luxury fashion brand, a space, in between. This bomber jacket is from my line.”

“I took one of my children to a jewelry-making workshop at Hesta. Upon entering, I spotted a necklace crafted from carabiners. It was awesome. Then I created one, which turned out nowhere near as cool!”

T-shirt: Arq. Skirt: “Pyrmont skirt crafted by me using my pattern brand Muna and Broad.” Belts: Etsy and Street & Saddle. Boots: Tracey Neuls. Bag: Lindquist. Eyewear: Fabulous Fanny’s.

“You can don a simple outfit, yet if you incorporate a statement piece, it unifies the entire look. This red bag serves as a statement piece for me. It grounds an outfit.”

“I recently encountered someone donning multiple skirts, several garments, and three belts. I was hugely inspired by his three-belt ensemble. I instantly pondered, How many belts do I own? Fashion can at times come across as serious, yet it must also be enjoyable.”

Thank you, Leila, and congratulations on your new publication!

P.S. More weeks of outfits are on the way, featuring a therapist with a flower garden and a cardiologist who adores color.
