My Visit to Calico Coffee in London

My Visit to Calico Coffee in London

Before my brief trip to London last week, my daughter mentioned her desire to take me to a new coffee shop she believed I would enjoy. So, after pulling myself out of bed on a Sunday morning, the final day of our 4-day journey and following an eventful few days, I went to meet her at Waterloo at Calico Coffee, located at 101 Lower Marsh Street, roughly a 5-minute walk from Waterloo Railway Station.

Upon entering, you encounter a relatively open area, providing space to browse their coffee menu and pastry selection displayed in a glass case (very Nordic). The brew bar directly in front is adorned with a La Marzocco Strada, and to the right, they have coffee beans available for purchase or can grind them for you as well.

As you stroll along the left side, you’ll spot wooden shelves lined with magazines.

The overall ambiance felt distinctly Japanese with its minimalist aesthetic and décor reminiscent of contemporary Japanese eateries, featuring high stool seating at the back near the counter where filter coffees are brewed. At the rear stood an attractive one-group espresso machine labeled Maxim, and when I inquired, they informed me it was a Chinese-made espresso machine (despite its French name).

As I made my way back, I noticed that one of the baristas must have received this honor…

After examining the coffee menu and inquiring with the barista about their blends suitable for milk-based coffee and the cup size for their flat white (a typical quirk of mine, apologies), I chose their house blend when I heard “Kenya.” My daughter opted for the americano.

A delightful cup with berry notes (a classic Kenyan characteristic) on the palate.

So, who or what is Calico?

In summary, it’s the first venture owned by two Chinese entrepreneurs, and from what I observed, they appear dedicated to demonstrating to London that Chinese-inspired (or perhaps Japanese) décor, complemented by an extensive brew bar, ample staff, pastries, and a relaxed atmosphere is a niche they are eager to fill within the London specialty coffee landscape.

Will I return again ❓

Absolutely, as I also want to experience their filter brewing techniques.

We met a friendly barista named Maria, of Portuguese descent, who shared insights about the shop, which opened only about 3 months ago.

Before departing, I approached their coffee retail shelf and after examining numerous labels and being encouraged by Maria, I chose an Ecuadorian Anaerobic coffee from a Paris-based coffee roaster, Tanat, known for its vibrant orange packaging. I am eager to brew this at home soon. ☺️

If you find yourself in London and near Waterloo, do check them out—I don’t think you’ll be disappointed; rather… you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
