The other night, I caught a cold, and because I tend to be a bit of a baby when I’m not feeling well, Freddie came over to Brooklyn. I stacked blankets on the sofa, and we settled in to watch…
…The Firm, the 1993 legal thriller featuring Tom Cruise and Jeanne Tripplehorn. Have you ever seen it? For starters, I did NOT remember the length of the movie being two hours and 34 minutes! Nonetheless, the storyline moves quickly — Harvard graduate Mitch McDeere gets a job with a prominent law firm in Memphis, which we quickly find out has some shady dealings. One of the dramatic lines that Tom Cruise delivers with great flair: “Hey, Ray, wouldn’t it be amusing if I went to Harvard, you ended up in prison, and we both found ourselves in the midst of criminals?”
We enjoyed it so much that Freddie proposed a Tom Cruise film marathon this autumn (think: Risky Business, Top Gun, The Outsiders…). So, last night, we checked out Cocktail, the amusing yet truly awful film about a bartender aspiring for fame. It received a 9% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
After diving into a variety of Tom Cruise films, maybe we’ll choose another actor: Olivia Colman? Pedro Pascal? Steve Carell? Queen Latifah? Have you ever picked an actor (or author) and watched (or read) several of their works?
No idea about the ice situation in Freddie’s glass
Additionally, a quick update: Freddie has been spending more quality time with the boys, which has been delightful.
And even Georgie gives his approval. xo
P.S. An absolutely beautiful movie, my brother being entertaining, and what films can you rewatch endlessly?
**Our Approach to Enjoying Movies Together: A Manual for an Ideal Movie Night**
In our fast-moving society, carving out time to unwind and watch a movie with friends or family can be quite difficult. However, with some organization and strategy, you can create a memorable movie-viewing experience for everyone involved. Here is an extensive guide on how to plan the ultimate movie night with your loved ones.
**1. Set a Date and Time**
The initial step in organizing a movie night is to select a date and time that suits everyone. Utilize a group chat or scheduling application to identify a time when everyone can join. Opt for a weekend evening when participants can relax without the burden of the next day’s responsibilities.
**2. Select the Appropriate Platform**
Determine which platform you will use to watch the movie. Whether it is a streaming service like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, or a physical DVD, make sure everyone can access the chosen medium. For remote viewings, consider using a service like Teleparty (formerly Netflix Party) to synchronize playback and have discussions during the movie.
**3. Compile a Movie List**
Create a list of potential films to view. Keep in mind everyone’s tastes and try to find a genre or theme that appeals to the group. You could set up a poll to let everyone cast their votes on their favorites. This inclusive method ensures everyone feels a part of the decision-making.
**4. Establish the Ideal Atmosphere**
Cultivate the right mood for your movie night by setting up a cozy and welcoming environment. Dim the lights, organize comfortable seating, and ensure that the room temperature is pleasant. If hosting virtually, encourage participants to replicate this in their own settings.
**5. Arrange Snacks and Beverages**
No movie night is complete without refreshments. Prepare a selection of snacks, including popcorn, sweets, and healthy options like fruit or veggie sticks. For drinks, think about offering soda, juice, or specially themed cocktails/mocktails. If watching remotely, suggest that everyone make similar snacks to enhance the communal experience.
**6. Set Ground Rules**
To ensure that everyone enjoys the film, define a few ground rules. Agree on a no-talking policy during pivotal scenes, decide if phones should be put away, and clarify whether pausing the movie for breaks is permitted. Clear guidelines help maintain concentration and minimize interruptions.
**7. Participate in Post-Movie Conversations**
After the viewing, make time to discuss the movie with the group. Share opinions on the plot, characters, and any memorable moments. This can be done face-to-face or through a video call if watching online. Engaging in a conversation enriches the experience and allows everyone to voice their views.
**8. Plan for the Next Movie Night**
Before concluding, discuss ideas for the next movie night. Reflect on what was enjoyable and what could be improved. Consider alternating responsibilities for hosting or selecting films to keep it fresh and exciting.
By adhering to these guidelines, you can create an enjoyable and seamless movie-watching experience that strengthens connections and forms lasting memories. Whether gathering in person or joining virtually, a well-organized movie night is a fantastic way to unwind and enjoy quality time with loved ones.
