“People are really into aura nails currently,” Tembe notes. “Nails are taking on a mood ring appearance. I often inquire with the owner of my favorite salon about popular requests. She informs me that clients are favoring charms and 3D designs. Almond-shaped stiletto nails have been in vogue for quite some time, but square styles are making a comeback as well.”

“I admire Lesly Arrañaga’s artistry. She draws from her Mexican roots — for instance, she crafted a collection where her family members, including her father, wore her nail designs. It was whimsical, nostalgic, and deeply embedded in her heritage. She also made resin bubbles featuring portraits of her dog. Her creations consistently present a fresh perspective, which is uncommon in all art forms, but especially in nails, where a style can gain traction on Pinterest and be quickly replicated. She’s also an exceptionally skilled sculptor. She’ll fashion an entire spam musubi on a natural nail!”

On a low-effort style:
“I tend to go for a multi-colored French tip. One, because I’m a bit lazy — a French tip masks the growth, so even after several weeks, they still appear quite nice. And two, I dislike spending long hours at the salon for intricate designs. However, I do like to experiment with various colors on each nail.”

Tembe’s salon etiquette:
1. Arrive punctually for your appointment. “Even showing up five minutes late can set a nail technician’s schedule back by 10 minutes; that 10 minutes can snowball into 20 minutes, and so forth. My nail tech is a mom, so whenever I arrive late, I always think, ‘Oh my god, she needs to pick up her daughter from school.’ If you’re late, modify your design to account for lost time.”
2. Don’t take calls on speaker. “I have often been guilty of answering the phone, hitting the speaker button, and then placing my hands under the UV lamp. But seriously, let’s all bring headphones. The salon is a communal area, and people want to unwind.”
3. Arrive with a clear vision of what you desire. “If you’re after something particular, come to your appointment with reference images and the colors you envision. This saves your nail tech precious time and prevents you from causing delays that might affect their other clients.”
4. Be cordial. “Always learn your nail technician’s name, of course. It’s significant to connect with the people you frequently see and acknowledge them as individuals who lead lives beyond their work.”
5. If you’re dissatisfied with your nails, communicate. “I understand this can make individuals anxious, but I assure you, nail technicians would appreciate you saying, ‘Hey, I’m not thrilled with how this looks,’ so they can rectify your nails immediately, rather than you leaving unhappy and needing a fix the next day. It’s far easier to correct things on the spot than once your nails are completely cured.”
