Years back, my friend Sharon Beesley shattered my heart when she relocated from New York City to Guilford, Connecticut. However, she and her family flourished — she established a therapy practice, and her children advanced from middle school to high school and now, to college. Sharon and her husband Rob (who supported me through my divorce) have just become empty nesters. Here, Sharon reveals five outfits she donned in a week, featuring thrifted dresses, gardening overalls, and her beloved swimsuit…
Dress: thrifted. Hair accessories: French combs. Footwear: Comfortiva.
“Almost all of my clothes are thrifted, including this dress. My favorite shop for anything special is Vintanthro in New Haven. They remember me, they know my kids. They ask, tell us about your next event! It’s a nostalgic shopping experience, where they pick items and accessorize, and they’re just so thrilled for me.”
“And then there’s Goodwill. You might find nothing, and it requires regular visits. I go at least weekly with my kids. Lately, I’m into vintage sweatshirts and short-sleeve button-ups, so I head straight to those areas because it can get overwhelming otherwise. Location matters too — I’m fortunate to live in Connecticut where the Goodwills are exceptional.”
Tank: similar. Skirt: similar.
“Currently, for my hair, I’m following the whole shower-then-keep-it-wet-and-not-touch-it-and-apply-Perfect-Hair-Day-by-Living-Proof-5-in-1-Styling-Treatment trend. It feels like a movement at this moment.”
“Being a therapist is such an incredible job. There’s something about listening to someone’s narrative for a full hour; we often don’t get that chance in life. I strive to comprehend precisely what each person conveys. If they mention the word ‘odd’ or ‘you know what I mean,’ I’ll probe to ensure I’m grasping their message accurately and not making assumptions. I need to be mindful with my kids because I don’t want them to feel like they’re always in a therapy session. Sometimes I ask, do you want me to give therapy advice or be a mom right now? If they prefer the latter, I’ll just say ‘that’s tough’ and validate their feelings.”
Tee: thrifted. Overalls: thrifted, “handed down from my son, it’s amazing having sons who enjoy thrifting,” similar. Sneakers: Converse.
“I have a bee tattoo. Initially, because my last name is ‘Beesley,’ and also because I underwent a transformation, transitioning from being Mormon to not-Mormon and from being a stay-at-home mom to pursuing grad school for therapy. I had strong feelings about how Mormon women cannot occupy higher leadership positions, while bee hives are matriarchal. A few days before my start at Columbia, I had a few hours to spare before picking up my kids from school. With countless walk-in tattoo spots in New York, I selected one and got it. It was exhilarating. The only downside of the tattoo is that it appears on every pillow from T.J. Maxx to Michaels.”
“As a child, I was passionate about gymnastics, and then that passion faded for a long time, but now gardening has filled that void. My favorite activities include watching gardening shows, reading about gardening, planning my garden, planting it, and watching it flourish. My flowers blanket the front yard, and I aim to provide my neighbors with an experience — almost like an art installation, imitating a wildflower field in the suburbs! It brings me joy to see people slow down as they walk or drive by. I expect some flowers to be trampled or picked by toddlers — and I welcome that. I should post a sign that says, ‘Please touch.’”
Tank: Old Navy. Leggings: Old Navy. Sneakers: Nike. Dog: “Pluto, the love of my life.”
“I have a gap between my front teeth. Over the years, I’ve spent thousands trying to rectify it — including Invisalign, braces, porcelain veneers, temporary retainers, a permanent retainer — and ultimately, I decided I’m done fighting it. It took me 40 years to accept it, but now I adore my gap.”
“Vintage workout attire is hard to come by, so I purchase them new. Old Navy has really excelled — the styling is fantastic, the fits are excellent, and the colors are wonderful.”
“I participate in Orangetheory. I alternate between a 50-minute weightlifting class and a 60-minute body class. I’ve attended 1,000 classes, and my husband asked me recently, ‘So, does it get easier? Is it enjoyable?’ And I replied, no! Each time, I can’t wait for it to finish. But I feel fantastic afterward. When I’m in a sour mood, my kids will ask, ‘Mom, when’s the last time you went to the gym?’”
Swimsuit: Anemos. Skirt: thrifted, similar.
“My clothing budget typically ranges from $5 to $10, but I indulged in this swimsuit. I adore the back, and I couldn’t find another like it anywhere. I wear it for swimming, then use it as a top with a skirt, jeans, whatever.”
“My three children just left for college, and I’m uncertain how I’ll handle being an empty nester. I married at 21 and had my first child at 23, meaning I’ve never truly experienced being an adult without children at home. I’m eager to discover what that feels like. I believe my kids and I are on parallel journeys, all moving forward and embracing new experiences.”
Thank you so much, Sharon! You’re truly amazing.
