Step-by-Step Instructions for Setting Up a Corkboard Wall - Just a Girl Blog

I put up this corkboard wall in just a few hours, and I’m excited to share the tutorial with you! The most challenging part was the concern about whether it would adhere to the wall (here’s a hint—it did!). Now, let’s explore how it all started.

This wall had shelves for several years, but they were no longer serving my needs. I absolutely adore traveling, so I wanted to showcase the numerous keepsakes I’ve gathered over time. Thus, the corkboard made its entrance.

Given that a strong adhesive is required for the cork roll, I really wanted to avoid sticking it directly to the wall. We bought some budget-friendly plywood, cut it to fit the wall, and secured it with screws. Don’t forget to create openings for any outlets present on your wall as well!

This is where my husband bows out, and I step in. The corkboard installation was my responsibility. It was pretty much a solo job aside from the early stages when I needed an extra set of hands to help align it properly, and then I was able to continue on my own. Once you begin applying the cork to the roll, there is no margin for mistakes. So, be sure to start in a corner and work your way down the wall.

I utilized a notch trowel to spread the adhesive on the wall and then smoothed the cork over it using a rolling pin. I was anxious about creating bubbles, but the adhesive worked wonders! No bubbles at all.

At the wall’s edge, I carefully used a sharp utility knife to trim along the edge. It was so sharp that it sliced right through the cork and into my thumb. Thankfully, it was nothing that a quick visit to the emergency clinic couldn’t handle!

I don’t usually take pictures of graphic injuries. Ha! I was showing my husband to see if I needed stitches. I’ll skip the details.

To wrap it all up, I painted a corner piece of trim to match the wall and applied a small bead of wood glue for adhesion. Since the cork is slim enough, I just positioned it alongside my crown molding and baseboards. No one would ever suspect it’s untrimmed at the top and bottom, saving me a lot of time!

Ready for your supply list? It’s brief and straightforward, but it’s crucial to use the correct materials.

  • Cork. I searched high and low for the right roll. There are so many varieties, but I didn’t want ANY seams. Consequently, I opted to spend a bit more. I found cork rolls at Bangor Cork, which offered the best price and a wide range of options! I bought a roll and had it cut to 8 feet—the height of my ceilings. Honestly, the extra cost was worth it as it looks so seamless!
  • Notch trowel. It doesn’t need to be anything specific—just a tool with teeth to apply the adhesive on the wall and provide a surface for the cork to adhere to.
  • Flooring Adhesive. This was the highlight of the project. It was forgiving enough to give me a moment to reposition, but once it began setting, there was no altering it! I was thankful for that because, as mentioned earlier, I was overly concerned this would turn out poorly. Cheers to success! 😉
  • Utility Knife. If you’re aiming to slice your thumb, you might consider this utility knife? Just kidding—sort of, but this knife is incredibly sharp and did exactly what I intended!
  • Rolling Pin. My trusty old rolling pin was another vital tool. It made smoothing out the cork much easier.

After all those subpar iPhone pictures, here’s a better one to show off the completed corkboard wall.

I absolutely love it, and I hope the instructions were sufficiently clear! If you’re curious to see more of the finished corkboard wall, click here!

# Step-by-Step Guide to Installing a Corkboard Wall

Creating a corkboard wall can be an excellent way to organize your space, whether it’s in a home office, classroom, or kitchen. It serves as a flexible surface for pinning notes, photos, calendars, and more. In this guide, inspired by the creativity of the “Just a Girl Blog,” we’ll guide you through the process of putting up your very own corkboard wall.

## Materials Needed

Before starting, gather the following materials:

– Corkboard sheets or rolls
– Measuring tape
– Pencil
– Level
– Utility knife or scissors
– Adhesive (such as contact cement or heavy-duty double-sided tape)
– Paint roller or brush (if using contact cement)
– Sandpaper (optional)
– Ruler or straight edge
– Push pins or thumbtacks

## Step 1: Plan Your Wall

Begin by determining the size and site of your corkboard wall. Measure the area where you plan to install the corkboard. Think about how you’ll use the space and make sure it’s easily reachable.

## Step 2: Choose Your Corkboard

Corkboard is available in various thicknesses and sizes. For wall installation, sheets or rolls that are at least 1/4 inch thick are suggested for durability and ease of use. You can find corkboard at most office supply stores or online.

## Step 3: Prepare the Wall

Ensure the wall surface is clean and smooth. If needed, sand away any rough edges to create an even surface for the corkboard to stick to. Clean any dust or debris with a damp cloth.

## Step 4: Cut the Corkboard

With your measurements in hand, cut the corkboard to fit the designated area. A utility knife or sharp scissors will work well for this step. Use a ruler or straight edge to ensure clean, straight cuts.

## Step 5: Apply Adhesive

If using contact cement, apply it to both the wall and the back of the corkboard with a paint roller or brush. Adhere to the manufacturer’s instructions for drying time before attaching the corkboard to the wall. If using double-sided tape, apply strips on the back of the corkboard, ensuring even coverage.

## Step 6: Install the Corkboard

Carefully align the corkboard with your designated area on the wall. Starting from one edge, press the corkboard firmly against the wall, smoothing out any air bubbles as you go. Use a level to confirm the corkboard is straight.

## Step 7: Secure the Edges

Verify that all edges are firmly adhered to the wall. If any corners or edges are loose, add more adhesive and press down firmly.

## Step 8: Finishing Touches

Once the corkboard is in place, step back and admire your handiwork. You’re now ready to organize your space by pinning up notes, photos, and other items. Consider adding a decorative frame or border around the corkboard for a neat appearance.

## Maintenance Tips

– Regularly clean the corkboard with a soft cloth.
– Avoid using heavy or sharp items that could damage the cork.
– If the corkboard starts to come loose, reapply adhesive as needed.

## Conclusion

Installing a corkboard wall is a straightforward yet effective way to boost your organizational skills. With a few tools and some creativity, you can convert any area into a functional and stylish space. Whether inspired by the “Just a Girl Blog” or your unique ideas, a corkboard wall is a project that combines practicality with aesthetic appeal. Enjoy your newly organized environment!
