Step-by-Step Instructions for Setting Up a Corkboard Wall

I set up this corkboard wall in just a few hours, so I’m excited to share the tutorial with you! The most challenging part was simply worrying about whether it would adhere to the wall (spoiler alert—it did!). So, let’s explore how it all started.

I’ve had shelves on this wall for a long time, but they stopped being useful for me. I absolutely adore traveling, so I wanted to showcase the numerous treasures I’ve gathered over the years. Hence, the corkboard came into play.

Since a strong adhesive is necessary for the cork roll, I was hesitant to apply it directly to the wall. We bought some affordable plywood, shaped it to fit the wall, and secured it with screws. Remember to make openings for any outlets you may have on the wall too!

This is where my husband leaves, and I take the stage. The corkboard installation was my task. It was mostly a solo endeavor aside from the initial setup. I needed an extra hand to help me align it properly, and then I was ready to go. Once you start placing the cork on the roll, there’s no room for mistakes. So, begin in a corner and work your way down the wall.

I employed a notch trowel to spread the adhesive onto the wall, then used a rolling pin to smooth the cork over it. I was quite anxious about bubbles, but the adhesive worked like a charm! No bubbles at all.

When I reached the edge of the wall, I used a sharp utility knife to cut along the edge. It was so sharp that it sliced right through the cork and my thumb. Nothing a quick trip to the emergency clinic couldn’t fix!

I don’t typically take photos of graphic injuries. Ha! I was showing my husband to see if I needed stitches. I’ll spare you the graphic details.

To complete the look, I painted a corner piece of trim to match the wall and simply used a small bead of wood glue to attach it. Since the cork is thin enough, I just placed it next to my crown molding and baseboards. No one would ever guess that it isn’t trimmed at the top and bottom edges, saving me plenty of time!

Alright. Ready for your supply list? It’s brief and straightforward—but it’s crucial that you select the right materials.

Corkboard supply list

  • Cork. I searched extensively for the right roll. You could choose from so many variations, but I wanted to avoid any seams. Because of that, I spent a bit more money. I found cork rolls at Bangor Cork. They had the best prices and a wide variety! I bought a roll and had it cut to 8 feet—the height of my ceilings. Seriously, it was worth the extra expense as it looks so streamlined!
  • Notch trowel. It doesn’t have to be anything specific—just something with teeth to spread the adhesive on the wall and give the cork something to adhere to.
  • Flooring Adhesive. This was the highlight. It allowed me some leeway to adjust, but once it began to set, there was no repositioning! I was thankful for that because, as I mentioned, I was really worried this would turn out badly. Cheers to success! 😉
  • Utility Knife. If you’re aiming to cut your thumb, may I recommend this utility knife? I’m joking—sort of—but this knife is extremely sharp. It did exactly what I wanted!
  • Rolling Pin. Another standout was my old rolling pin. It made smoothing out the cork so much simpler.

Well, after all those not-so-great iPhone photos, here’s a better one to remind you of the completed corkboard wall.

I really love it, and I hope the instructions were clear enough! If you want to see more of the finished corkboard wall, check it out here!

**Step-by-Step Guide to Installing a Corkboard Wall**

Creating a corkboard wall is a smart and stylish solution to organize your space, whether in a home office, kitchen, or classroom. Corkboard walls are ideal for pinning notes, photos, and reminders. Here’s an efficient step-by-step guide to help you install a corkboard wall.

**Materials Needed:**

1. Corkboard sheets or rolls
2. Measuring tape
3. Pencil
4. Level
5. Utility knife or scissors
6. Adhesive (corkboard adhesive or double-sided mounting tape)
7. Roller or squeegee
8. Sandpaper (optional)
9. Paint or sealant (optional)
10. Straightedge or ruler

**Step 1: Measure the Wall Area**

Start by measuring the area where you want to put the corkboard. Use a measuring tape to find out the height and width of the space. This will help you buy the right amount of corkboard material.

**Step 2: Purchase Corkboard Material**

Select either corkboard sheets or rolls based on your preference and the wall size. Sheets are generally easier to manage for smaller sections, while rolls are better for covering larger areas.

**Step 3: Prepare the Wall**

Ensure that the wall surface is clean, dry, and smooth. If needed, sand down any rough areas to create an even surface. This will promote better bonding with the adhesive.

**Step 4: Cut the Corkboard**

With a utility knife or scissors, cut the corkboard to fit the dimensions of the wall area you measured. Use a straightedge or ruler to ensure nice, straight cuts.

**Step 5: Apply Adhesive**

If using corkboard adhesive, apply it to the back of the corkboard or directly to the wall, according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If using double-sided mounting tape, apply strips evenly across the back of the corkboard.

**Step 6: Position the Corkboard**

Carefully place the corkboard on the wall. Start in one corner and press it firmly against the wall, smoothing it as you go to prevent air bubbles. Use a level to check that it is straight.

**Step 7: Secure the Corkboard**

Employ a roller or squeegee to press the corkboard securely against the wall, ensuring a solid bond. Pay particular attention to the edges and corners.

**Step 8: Trim Excess Material**

If there’s any excess corkboard material along the edges, trim it with a utility knife for a neat finish.

**Step 9: Optional Finishing Touches**

For additional durability, consider applying a sealant or paint to the corkboard surface. This can further enhance its look and make cleaning easier.

**Step 10: Let it Set**

Allow the adhesive to cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions before using the corkboard wall. This typically takes 24 to 48 hours.

**Conclusion**

Installing a corkboard wall is a simple DIY project that can improve both the function and look of any room. By following these steps, you’ll create a flexible space for organization and creativity. Enjoy your new corkboard wall!
