The Crucial Daily Habit That Changes My Day | Cup of Jo

What daily habits do you eagerly anticipate? Early in 2021 — during lockdown — my friends and I set ourselves the goal of walking 10,000 to 12,000 steps each day. I soon developed a passion for walking — observing people, encountering adorable dogs, clearing my thoughts, and enjoying the fresh air against my skin. Occasionally, I’ll go out in less comfortable attire (rigid jeans, dresses), but ideally, before I step outside, I’ll throw on soft, cozy pieces. Recently, I’ve been drawn to coordinated sets, like this cropped sweatshirt paired with shorts. Isn’t the light blue hue lovely?

Having lived in New York for 23 years, walking and biking have always been integral to my daily routine. Still, part of me feared the prospect of hitting such a high step count — 12,000 steps is quite a challenge! However, after the first week, I discovered that I craved long walks. As my friend Gisela, a fellow walking enthusiast, puts it when she rises, “It’s like I have a walk inside me.” I adore that expression.

I aim to feel comfortable yet put together. This lightweight trench is ideal for transitional spring and autumn days. (It could also be styled with a mini skirt or relaxed trousers.) One route I thoroughly enjoy leads to the Brooklyn Promenade. The view of the Manhattan skyline is absolutely breathtaking, particularly at sunset, and you often witness engagements happening. Along the way, I also admire stunning brownstones — many residents leave their curtains ajar, making it delightful to glimpse their artwork.

I firmly believe that everyone looks great in a half zip! I’ve worn this white version to the park with the kids and during evening hangs on the stoop with friends. It pairs beautifully with jeans and leggings and serves as a fantastic travel piece for extended journeys.
