As a small business, should you participate in Black Friday? Personally, I believe “absolutely, you should.”

Don’t misunderstand me; I have a strong aversion to Black Friday. I consider it a dreadful notion for many reasons.

It frequently promotes overconsumption and diminishes the worth of quality goods, besides, small businesses struggle to offer substantial discounts while already finding it challenging to make reasonable profits.

Year after year, the so-called bargains appear to revolve more around large corporations discarding their inferior quality inventory or providing unrealistic offers, or at least that’s how it seems to me.

It’s no longer just one day; some retailers and online marketplaces are advertising Black Friday deals up to a month (or even 2 months) in advance of the actual date. In 2025, Black Friday occurs on November 28th.

That said, unfortunately, it’s here to stay. It represents a significant retail sales day, making it unfortunate for small businesses not to participate, be involved, and thus grab their share of the sales revenue pie.

As with all sales and promotional offers, small businesses consistently provide genuine deals. They often do it better than larger companies, providing their customers with a more meaningful offer.

How Small Businesses Can Approach Black Friday

Making Black Friday advantageous for you and beneficial for your customers is essential. You can offer a straightforward percentage discount across the board if that suits you. Alternatively, get inventive to derive more value from discounting while providing your cherished customers with a fantastic deal.

One of the greatest advantages of being a small business is your adaptability and creativity. Unlike larger retailers, you can infuse a personal, thoughtful element into your Black Friday promotions.

Whether it’s a beautifully packaged mystery box, a themed gift set, or a warm thank-you note including a future discount with every order, these nuances make your offers distinctive and ensure customers return long after Black Friday.

Here are some ideas:

I will definitely do it again and ended up spending significantly more with this store than I planned. A win-win for both the shop and me, their customer.

If you’re still thinking “I absolutely will not participate in Black Friday,” may I suggest a slightly different perspective? I prefer to view it as rewarding your loyal customers for choosing to shop with you. Does this make it feel less unpleasant?

If you’re concerned that discounts could devalue your offerings, remember that you can frame your promotions as a reward rather than a price cut. For instance, offering a complimentary gift or an exclusive bonus for purchases above a certain threshold helps you maintain your brand’s value while still engaging in the Black Friday excitement.

During the holiday season, securing your customers’ money before anyone else is vital. What I mean is this: Most shoppers have a list of recipients and typically a set budget. Once a person is accounted for at that budget, they cross them off and no more spending occurs.

However, before you automatically dismiss the notion of participating in the chaos that is Black Friday, I encourage you to consider if there’s something you could do that would benefit both your business and your wonderfully loyal customers.

It would be unfortunate to withdraw solely because you, like me, perceive Black Friday as a negative.

It is happening, it is significant, so don’t allow the faceless corporations of the world to reap all the benefits; take your share of the action.
