The Tale Behind Our Christmas Wishmas Tree

The Tale Behind Our Christmas Wishmas Tree

I get it, I get it. The Christmas festivities have wrapped up. But what in the world is a Wishmas tree? It’s our family’s way of focusing on others. I initiated this some years back with my children, as this season is often about asking for ourselves, right? So I devised the Wishmas tree to request items for others instead.

It’s an unpretentious tree that we currently place in the dining area, but when the children were younger, they adored it in the kitchen! It was “almost” as thrilling as their advent calendars. I embellish it with a simple garland—this year it’s a bell garland from Michael’s. I bought it last year, but I came across some similar garlands here and here.

Though it wasn’t meant to be, it has turned into a sort of time capsule for us. Each year, the kids request items reflecting what’s happening in our world. I have a high school senior this year, so you can guess how earnestly she desires this.

The guidelines are quite straightforward. They have to wish for someone or something beyond themselves. The Wishmas tree is a moment to contemplate others. My son may have wished for lower taxes 😉, but he also wished for a coworker to recover. No questions posed. I’m simply pleased to see him considering someone else.

If you ever wish to create your own Wishmas tree, I hope this provides you with some motivation! I keep the cards and ornaments set aside to revisit as they grow older…and I can never seem to recall that we’ve had this tradition until I show them. Ugh.
