Top 10 Most Loved Products at Trader Joe's

I recently came across the particular joy of enjoying a thorough shopping session at Trader Joe’s. I frequented the store in my twenties (mostly for wine), but then I married a TJ’s enthusiast who “stops by” the store pretty much daily — subsequently removing any need for me to go. However, Trader Joe’s is a constantly evolving paradise, and I was delighted to rediscover some classic favorites (still great! still reasonably priced!), along with some amazing newcomers. Here are my current top 10…

Garlic Spread Dip. The first time I purchased this, I mistakenly bought just one. I intended to use it on a variety of dinner dishes (spread on chicken breasts! dolloped on baked potatoes!). But, before I even began preparing, it was all gone. I’m sure it would be fantastic on many items, but I can tell you it’s DIVINE on a seedy cracker.

Mushroom Risotto. I adore risotto, and prior to my daughter Margot’s arrival, I enjoyed hovering over the stove while it simmered, carefully adding broth and wine. But Margot doesn’t have time for all that fuss. TJ’s risotto is ready in five minutes, and the first time I cooked it, I was nearly annoyed by how delicious it turned out.

Rainbow’s End Trail Mix. For me, this is the ultimate trail mix. I haven’t found another that achieves the balance of salty, sweet, crunchy, chewy, and tart quite so perfectly. If they ever discontinue this, I will simply stop eating trail mix. (Please, please, don’t ever discontinue it!)

Soft & Juicy Mango. Every member of my family carries a pack of these dried mango slices in their backpacks. They last indefinitely, take up minimal space, and are immensely satisfying. I can’t go on a road trip without them.

Jojoba Oil. I’m an enthusiastic hand-cream lover. I could compile an extensive list of luxury hand creams that soothe my dry skin, but for my cuticles? Nothing works as effectively as this oil. WOW. Did everyone know about jojoba oil? It’s like a Magic Eraser for the rough patches around your nails. I apply a couple of drops once a day and it feels like I don’t even have cuticles anymore?!

Vegetable Bird’s Nests. But let’s return to food. Can we discuss veggie nests? They are so delicious, and sadly overlooked! Every visit to the store, I fear I’ll find them discontinued because everyone rushes past them on their way to the dumplings. And I’ll concede: on the packaging, they appear like tangled bundles of rubber bands. But they are the most flavorsome, crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside, utterly delectable treats, and they make our kitchen smell amazing. Bake them before friends arrive, and everyone will come in asking, “Ooh, what are you cooking?”

Lavash bread. Lavash is a lunchtime champion, for both adults and toddlers. It’s softer and more pliable than pita, but much sturdier than sandwich bread, and it won’t become soggy if filled with grilled veggies or drizzled with vinaigrette. It also conveniently has a perforated line down the middle like a roll of paper towels — a quirk I oddly appreciate, as it saves a step when I’m preparing the previously mentioned toddler’s lunch at 7:22 a.m.

Giant Baked Beans in Tomato Sauce. We always keep these in our pantry. They’re consistently a crowd favorite — but they’re also an ME favorite. When dining alone, I skip the plating or reheating; I just open the can and grab a fork. [Here’s a recipe featuring them, too.]

Sous Vide Chicken Thighs. We all know TJ’s excels in the frozen section, but these refrigerated chicken thighs have officially become my favorite item in the store. They’re SUPER juicy, and can easily be enhanced with any sauce, but I personally enjoy them best with no additions. Cook them skin-side down on the stove, serve over a mound of sautéed greens, and you have a dinner party ready.

A Dozen Sweet Bites. Here’s another simple win for a dinner gathering. But in addition to being charming and sophisticated, they’re also quite tasty. I recommend grabbing one from the freezer in your pajamas when you crave a bedtime treat.

So, please, will you share your current favorites with me? What have I overlooked?
