I’ll be honest. My knowledge of Berlin, Germany, was limited. I imagined the Cold War and assumed I wouldn’t find it enjoyable. How wrong I was! So wrong that I wish we had spent more time there.
It’s such a joy to visit a place that is not just stunning, but also provides a history lesson I didn’t know I was looking for. Our single day there was pure bliss. The weather was perfect, allowing us to explore the city and uncover all its treasures.
My husband and I experienced numerous “wow!” moments. We took a tour to witness the stark contrast between West and East Berlin, even after all these years.
The trace of the Berlin Wall runs throughout the city. We were struck with awe as we strolled freely between the two sides, reflecting on how many lives were lost for that liberty in the past.
We also visited the spot of the book burning at Bebelplatz. The memorial is an underground library, which was incredibly impressive to witness.
The bear has become an emblem of Berlin, and we enjoyed finding the different variations of it scattered around the city.
The Holocaust Memorial deeply moved me; it was one of the most impactful I have ever visited. Again, we wandered at our own pace, absorbing the experience.
I had a moment of pure excitement when we discovered that the Alte Nationalgalerie was displaying an Impressionist art exhibition. It’s my favorite form of art, and I couldn’t believe my timing was so perfect!
