Trip to Calico Coffee in London

Trip to Calico Coffee in London

Before my brief trip to London last week, my daughter expressed her desire to take me to a new coffee shop she believed I would enjoy. So, after managing to rise from my bed on a Sunday morning, the final day of our four-day trip following a busy few days, I headed to meet her at Waterloo at Calico Coffee, located at 101 Lower Marsh Street, approximately a five-minute stroll from Waterloo Railway Station.

Upon stepping inside, you are welcomed by a relatively spacious area, allowing you to peruse their coffee menu and pastry selections displayed in a glass counter (very Nordic). Their brew bar in front is adorned with a La Marzocco Strada, and on the right side, they provide coffee beans for you to take home or have ground on-site.

As you stroll along the left side, you’ll spot wooden shelves filled with magazines.

The ambiance felt distinctly Japanese with its minimalist design and decor reminiscent of contemporary Japanese eateries, featuring high stool seating at the back next to the brewing area for filter coffees. At the rear, there was a visually appealing single-group espresso machine with a Maxim label on it, which I learned was a Chinese-made espresso machine (with a French name) when I inquired.

As I walked back, I noticed that one of the baristas must have achieved this…

Indeed, third place in the UK Brewers Championship in 2023.

After going over the coffee menu and interrogating the barista about their blends for milk-based coffees and the size options for their flat white (a typical habit of mine, apologies), I chose their house blend upon hearing “Kenya.” My daughter opted for the americano.

A delightful cup with berry undertones (a typical Kenyan characteristic) lingering on the edges of the tongue.

So, who exactly is Calico?

In summary, it’s the first establishment owned by two Chinese entrepreneurs, and from what I observed, they appear dedicated to demonstrating to London that a space inspired by Chinese (or is it Japanese?) decor, featuring a vast brew bar, numerous staff members, pastries, and a relaxing vibe is something they aim to contribute to the London specialty coffee scene.

Will I return ❓

Absolutely, as I also want to sample their filter brewing expertise.

We encountered a friendly barista, Maria, of Portuguese descent, who shared some insights about the shop, which opened only about three months ago.

Before departing, I made my way to their coffee retail shelf, and after browsing various labels and with encouragement from Maria, I selected an Ecuadorian Anaerobic coffee from a Parisian coffee roaster, Tanat, distinguished by its bright orange packaging. Eager to brew this at home soon. ☺️

If you find yourself in London and near Waterloo, be sure to visit them, and I don’t believe you’ll leave disappointed but rather… pleasantly surprised.

You can find them at Unit C, 101 Lower Marsh, London SE1 7AB.
