From London to Dubai.
We’ve encountered a few establishments similar to this one in Dubai, be it an upscale eatery, a patisserie, or a boutique, BUT when it pertains to specialty coffee, such places are quite uncommon here. In fact, one of my favorite specialty coffee spots from London is set to debut in Dubai this week or next – I’ll share more about it when I check it out, God willing.
So, let’s talk about Half Cup, Dubai.
I had never come across this venue, but when our daughter proposed we go there to celebrate my wife’s birthday over brunch, I looked them up and checked out their coffee, and off we went.
It’s located in a new residential development in Business Bay, surrounded by sleek apartment buildings named Peninsula 1, 2, 3, and so on, so as you drive in, you could be anywhere in the world, with the canal view nearby. Half Cup itself is ultra-modern, resembling a glass cube with plenty of sunlight streaming in and some outdoor seating for the cooler times – yes, it does cool down in Dubai, from early November to around late March.
Though the seating inside is somewhat limited, we managed to snag a spot as we entered. Our server, Chris, who was definitely my waiter of the year, was exceptionally attentive and helpful. I believe the first oversight we made was not heeding his advice regarding portion sizes. Whoa!
I’m not sure if you can gauge the size of our Turkish Eggs order with beef brisket, but the BBQ Beef Brisket Brioche sandwich was enough to feed three.
Whoa!!!!
If you choose to visit and order eggs royale, be warned – it’s also substantial enough for two, as I noticed the table next to us had placed that order.
So, what about the coffee?
On top of an eye-catching stainless steel brewing counter sat their dual group La Marzocco Linea espresso machine accompanied by a pair of Victoria Arduino grinders. They have a selection of coffees available for both filter and espresso, locally roasted by one of my favorite Dubai-based roasteries, so I felt confident in their offerings. I opted for a flat white, made with Brazilian beans.
Delicious, with notes of nuts and milk chocolate. It was fortunate that I ordered this prior to my meal, as I typically do when having eggs cooked in tomato sauce, like the Turkish eggs. If I hadn’t, finishing my coffee might have posed a challenge.
I highly recommend it, and did I mention they also have a dinner menu?
I’m already excited for my next visit because whenever I discover great food and coffee, you can bet I’ll plan to return there soon.
