Maybe, but while I don’t travel as frequently as I once did during my trips to Africa for the UN, passing through Dubai, London, and Johannesburg, I can assure you that I’ve yet to have a coffee experience that compares to the level I find in specialty coffee shops and at home.
It has always been a disappointment for my palate after a week of hard work in a foreign country, hurrying to the airport in the early morning or late at night, where all I craved was a good cup of “specialty” coffee – not just any coffee, but specialty.
So, late last year, after addressing an international conference on land degradation in Riyadh and steering clear of hotel coffee, I found myself dropped off at the new Terminal 4 of King Khalid airport. I dashed over eagerly to grab my specialty coffee fix, which I desperately needed after an early start (my flight was at 9 am, so I left the hotel before 7 am).

I also couldn’t resist buying some Kenyan arabica beans, which I’ve been brewing on my Hario V60 lately, and they are delicious. I should note that if you purchase a bag of coffee beans, they will offer you a complimentary cup of black coffee (not milk-based – I inquired and they said no).
