Uncovering the Best Specialty Coffee Offered at Airports

Uncovering the Best Specialty Coffee Offered at Airports

Does the title of my post seem bold (daring) ?

Maybe so, but while I don’t jet-set as frequently as I used to during my regular assignments in Africa for the UN, connecting through Dubai and London, as well as Johannesburg, I can confidently say I have yet to enjoy a coffee experience that matches what I find in specialty coffee shops or at home.

It was consistently a struggle for my taste buds after laboring for an entire week in a different country and hurrying to the airport, whether it was the crack of dawn or late at night, when all I craved was a decent cup of “specialty” coffee – no, not just any coffee, but the specialty kind.

So, late last year, after presenting at an international conference on land degradation in Riyadh and steering clear of hotel coffee, I realized I had been dropped off at the new Terminal 4 of King Khalid airport. Upon entering the gate area after passing security, I spotted a massive Starbucks right in front of the departure gates – my heart sank – but before I could express my dismay, I glanced to my far right and noticed a familiar sign…

Camel Step

A grin spread across my face.

Indeed, you may recall hearing about them, as I previously blogged about them while listing the top ten places for specialty coffee in Riyadh back in 2021.

I dashed over as quickly as possible to satisfy my specialty coffee craving, which was essential after an early start (my flight was at 9am, so I departed the hotel before 7am).

Camel Step, Riyadh terminal 4 airport

Camel Step has long been a cornerstone for specialty coffee in Saudi Arabia and sources excellent coffees. They utilize a Dalla Corte espresso machine for their espresso-based beverages and also offer snacks, pastries, cakes, and coffee beans. On my second visit,

On my first visit, I ordered a flat white.

Unicorn latte art

Wow! Check out the latte art here.

I can’t speak for other specialty coffee shops in international airports, but based on this experience, I would wager that this is the finest latte art found in an airport, as few baristas I’ve encountered are capable of producing this on a daily basis.

On my second visit, I also opted for a flat white too.

I couldn’t resist grabbing some Kenyan arabica beans, which I’ve been brewing on my Hario V60 lately and it’s delightful. I should mention that if you purchase a bag of coffee beans, they’ll provide you with a complimentary cup of black coffee (not milk-based – I inquired and they confirmed no).

There’s a cozy seating area, which fills up quickly.

Therefore, if you find yourself transiting through King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and are fortunate enough to be in Terminal 4, I highly recommend stopping by Camel Step for your specialty coffee fix; I believe you will be satisfied.

What a fantastic way to kick off your journey and day, with excellent coffee.
