From London to Dubai.
We’ve encountered a few spots like this in Dubai, whether it’s a high-end restaurant, a bakery, or a boutique, BUT when it comes to specialty coffee, this is quite uncommon. In fact, one of my favorite specialty coffee spots from London is set to open in Dubai this week or next – I’ll share more about it after my visit, God willing.
Now, onto Half Cup, Dubai.
I had no prior knowledge of this establishment, but when our daughter proposed we visit it to celebrate my wife’s birthday for brunch, I did a quick check on them and their coffee and off we went.
Located in a new residential development in Business Bay, surrounded by upscale-looking apartment towers named Peninsula 1, 2, 3, etc., as you drive up, you could find yourself anywhere in the world with a view of the canal close by. Half Cup itself is ultramodern, resembling a glass enclosure with abundant sunlight streaming in and some outdoor seating for when the weather cools – yes, it does cool down in Dubai, from early November to about late March.
Although seating inside is limited, we were fortunate to secure a spot upon arrival. We were served by my likely waiter of the year, Chris, who was incredibly attentive and accommodating. I believe the initial mistake we made was not heeding his advice on portion sizes. Whoa!
I’m not sure if you can grasp the size of our Turkish Eggs order with beef brisket, but the BBQ Beef Brisket Brioche sandwich was sizable enough for three.
Whoa!!!!
If you happen to visit and order eggs royale, be cautious as it’s also sufficient for two, as I noticed at the table next to us.
So, how does the coffee measure up?
Perched atop a striking steel brewing counter was their dual-group La Marzocco Linea espresso machine, accompanied by two Victoria Arduino grinders. They offer a selection of coffees for both filter and espresso, roasted locally by one of my top picks among Dubai roasteries, so I was confident in their choices. I opted for a flat white, made with Brazilian beans.
Delicious with notes of nuts and milk chocolate. It’s fortunate that I ordered this before my meal as I typically do when having eggs cooked in tomato sauce, i.e., the Turkish eggs. Otherwise, finishing my coffee might have posed a challenge.
Highly recommended and did I mention they also have a dinner menu?
