From London to Dubai.
We’ve encountered a few places like this in Dubai, be it a chic eatery, a patisserie, or a boutique, BUT when it comes to gourmet coffee, such finds are truly uncommon. In fact, one of my favorite specialty coffee spots from London is set to open in Dubai this week or next – I’ll share more about it after my visit, God willing.
Now, onto Half Cup, Dubai.
I had not heard of this establishment until our daughter proposed we go there to celebrate my wife’s birthday with brunch, so I did some research on their coffee and off we went.
It’s located in a new residential development in Business Bay, flanked by elegant-looking apartment complexes called Peninsula 1, 2, 3, etc. As you approach, you could be anywhere in the world, with a canal view not far off. Half Cup is extremely modern, resembling a glass box with ample sunlight pouring in and a few outdoor seats for the cooler times – yes, it does cool down in Dubai, from early November to late March.
While there aren’t many seats inside, we were fortunate enough to snag one upon entry. Our waiter, Chris, who I’d say is my waiter of the year, was very attentive and accommodating. I believe the first mistake we made was not heeding his advice on the portion sizes. Whoa!
I’m not sure if you can tell the size of our Turkish Eggs order with beef brisket, but the BBQ Beef Brisket Brioche sandwich was sizable enough for three.
Whoa!!!!
If you do visit and order the eggs royale, be warned that it’s also enough for two, as I noticed at the neighboring table.
So, what about the coffee?
Atop an impressive steel brewing bar rests their two-group La Marzocco Linea espresso machine paired with two Victoria Arduino grinders. They offer a range of coffees for both filter and espresso, roasted locally by one of my favorite Dubai roasters, so I had confidence in their selection. I opted for a flat white made with Brazilian beans.
Delicious, with notes of nuts and milk chocolate. I’m glad I ordered this before my meal, as I usually do when I have eggs cooked in tomato sauce, i.e., Turkish eggs. Otherwise, it might have been hard to finish my coffee.
I highly recommend it, and did I mention they also have a dinner menu?
I’m already anticipating my next visit because whenever I discover good food and coffee, I’ll be planning my return soon.
