Throughout 2025, I’ve had numerous coffee encounters, some familiar and others novel, and I often find myself hoping, maybe even praying, that one of my favorite spots would establish a presence in my city. So, I was thrilled to discover in Coffee News that Watchhouse, the leading specialty coffee chain from London, was set to open in Dubai. To top it off, it wasn’t one of those announcements promising a wait of two years, but rather in just a few weeks, with the grand opening happening in November 2025. Hurrah!
Nestled in an acclaimed pop-up area known as Marsa Boulevard, operating from 4pm-12am, adjacent to the Dubai Festival City Mall, Watchhouse is surrounded by various local coffee and cake establishments, along with a handful of international brands.
You’ll be pleased to hear that I visited twice within just four days.
During my initial visit, I wasn’t shocked to find a long line, as many Emiratis queuing were likely familiar with this brand from central London.
I patiently waited with my daughter, and since it was evening, I opted for a batch brew. Due to the crowd, seating was sparse; however, we managed to snag two seats in front of their brew bar, which was adorned with numerous V60 brewers.
Later, I learned from one of the baristas that they pre-dose and freeze their filter coffees, retrieving them for brewing upon receiving an order. While we were seated awaiting my coffee, I spotted a trophy for AeroPress champion and asked, “who won this?” having judged the UAE AeroPress championship just two days prior, where I met the individual who secured third place.
He generously offered us any coffee of our choice complimentary, and my daughter chose matcha… (I was hoping for coffee… but you know how trends are with GenZ… oh well). In any case, I decided on a flat white to try their milk-based beverages.
I can’t explain what they added to this, but it was undoubtedly one of the best flat whites I had all year… why? I asked the manager, and he mentioned the milk they utilize, which I think is the key difference, as their espresso blend, 1829 Espresso, is the same served in London.
The batch brew was delightful as well, giving off dark fruit notes, although I later realized I received the Ethiopian instead of the El Salvador (I believe) I requested.
A few days later, I arranged to meet a friend for lunch at the same mall, and as we wrapped up, I noticed the time was 3:30pm… just 30 minutes until Watchhouse opens. I strolled around and arrived promptly at 4pm to become their first customer. I wandered a bit and snapped some photos. I was tempted to indulge in a cake slice… who wouldn’t?
However, one of the staff members suggested that a chocolate tart (in the last picture) would pair perfectly with my flat white, so I gave in. My flat white was expertly poured by one of their primary baristas, who hailed from Cameroon (oops, I forgot his name).
I also met the head barista from Zimbabwe, who shared their philosophy with me, and I mentioned that I’ve been familiar with the brand for years and that it’s my go-to spot in London.
