Title of the initial entry presented by a once-popular blogger. Lol? Apologies. Took a break from writing, but now I have what I believe is a pretty fantastic tutorial for you! Who doesn’t appreciate some outdoor illumination, right?
After postponing for years, we finally added some outdoor lighting to our deck, and it. is. fabulous. Not only that, but it’s quite simple and fairly affordable to accomplish! That’s the reason I’m here. To guide you through my outdoor lighting methods.
Required materials:
- A deck. This might be a patio. Or a porch? Or a flooring with at least one wall?
- String lights. I suggest something industrial that can hold up better.
- Fence posts (ours originally were 12 feet, shortened to 9 feet) I couldn’t find the exact one online, but I provided a link to a shorter variant of what we bought.
- Small carabiners for each point you attach to the house
- Eye hooks to drill into the wall
- S hooks for every pole
- Cordless drill
- Hacksaw (for trimming your fence posts)
- Zip ties (of a similar style) to coordinate with your poles
Alright, first things first. You will need to determine the layout of your lights. Zigzag, square around your area? It’s entirely up to you! I’m showing you some not-so-great photos of the specific supplies I utilized.
There are obviously various ways to hang the lights on the pole, but we chose to drill a small hole and insert the S hook into it. It seems to be sturdy (keep in mind, there is a lot of tension once they’re hung), so I think it’s effective!
Once we drilled the holes into the poles and installed the S hooks, we secured them to our deck railing. Since we have metal railings, we couldn’t drill into them. Again—with a wing and a prayer—we opted to zip tie them to the railings. We used 18-inch industrial ties.
Once we snipped off the ends, you hardly notice them on the railing. Totally worth it even if you do see them! 🙂
Thennnn utilize the eye hooks to drill into your house (sounds scarier than it actually is!).
Connect the carabiner to the eye hook and then insert the light cord into the carabiner.
I recommend placing the hook at a height of around 9 1/2 feet. You want to allow a little sway for the string lights, and you don’t want anyone bumping their heads.
Honestly, the most challenging aspect of this entire project is figuring out the configuration of the lights. I only had to relocate one hook after drilling it into the wall, and I wasn’t too bothered by it. People shouldn’t be scrutinizing your house walls anyway!
