I can’t believe how much Tabs adored carbs! It was unbelievable. It made no sense to me. He was a meat lover! — so why did he seem more thrilled about a zinnia flower, a croissant, or a slice of toast than a piece of grilled chicken?
The only explanation I can come up with is that his previous dry food (Hill’s Science Diet) had whole grain wheat and other vegetable fillers, which I didn’t think much of back then, but after a few years, Tabs was diagnosed as pre-diabetic, and his vet advised him to steer clear of carbs.
Eventually, he switched to low glycemic, grain-free Nutrisca crunchies and grain-free wet food, which he consumed…hesitantly.
Well, he thoroughly enjoyed his evening wet food (mostly Sheba Paté, but occasionally he indulged in $$$ ZiwiPeak), yet I doubt he enjoyed it as much as he once relished regular Fancy Feast, which contains wheat for that tasty gravy.
Over time, I posed this question to several vets about why some cats enjoy munching on grass, other plants, and flowers, and they seemed uncertain. I suppose there are varied theories. Some vets believe that cats do it instinctively to clean their teeth, as the plant fibers can get stuck between their teeth and gums, or to obtain certain nutrients absent from meat, or simply to induce vomiting to help cleanse their digestive systems. Even wild felines do it.
I can’t pinpoint the reason, but I do know that Tabs was crazy about grass. He’d chow down on grass and flowers until he threw up whenever he could.
In contrast, Rosie shows minimal interest in grass, carbs, and other greenery. She has a strong craving for meat! Indeed, especially chicken and turkey.
